The Post-Sickness Cleaning Checklist You Need | Maid in Toronto

There’s always something going around, and whether you or someone you live with caught that cold or flu, you’ve got to nip it in the bud with the post-sickness cleaning checklist you need. Because, don’t you want to save others from the same, sickly fate? In the best of times, germs are everywhere and relatively harmless. In the worst of times, they are multiplying, just waiting for a host to latch on to. So, when your home gets invaded by unwanted bacteria it’s time to pull out your bucket of home cleaning supplies and get down to business!

The Cleaning Checklist: Feel Better!

Clean the Bedroom

When you’re sick, all you want to do is lay in bed. The trouble is that the bedroom is now contaminated, but it’s not beyond repair. When it comes to surfaces like door handles, light switches and bedside tables simply pull out your favorite commercial disinfectant, or create a home cleaning remedy out of vinegar. For maximum clean, these spots will need your full attention and a good wipe down with a microfiber cloth! Same goes for any other surfaces around your home like railings, counters and door knobs. Simple, easy, done!

However, blankets and bedding will take a little more effort. Because sick people sweat more than the average person, strip the affected bed of sheets and throw them all in the wash. Be sure to add all garments and blankets that were used during the incubation period. Nothing should be left behind! If you catch any stains prior to washing, be sure to treat them so as to maximize cleanliness once they’ve been laundered. Lastly, set the laundry machine to the hottest temperature and wash away!

Clean the Bathroom

When it comes to cleaning after being sick, the bathroom is one of the most important areas you need to be worried about. Because it’s a shared space, it holds high potential for infecting other people. With that said, you should be cleaning the entire bathroom, with special attention on the sink, toilet, flush handle, and tap handles.

You can use your favorite commercial cleaner or opt for a home-made remedy. However, did you know that steam cleaners are also a great way to get rid of the germs? Yep, the steam cleaner is great at getting into those hard-to-reach crannies around the toilet and tap. However, for a maximum clean, spray a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water prior to steaming and let it sit for a few minutes. Then steam away!

Clean the Kitchen

Just like the bathroom, the kitchen is a hot-spot for germs to accumulate, because even sick people need to eat! When you go to clean the kitchen, focus on things like the refrigerator door handle, and all cabinet and drawer handles that get frequently touched. You can use disinfectant wipes, your favorite commercial cleaner, or a home-made mixture of your choosing. And yes, you can also use your steam cleaner in the kitchen! But again, you should spray the surface with a cleaner, let it sit, and then steam away. All that’s left to do is wipe the handles down with a dampened microfiber cloth!

Clean the Electronics

Though it may seem like a mission and a half, cleaning electronics after an illness is super important. That goes for any cell phones, computers, keyboards and remotes that the sick person has touched. However, you probably haven’t cleaned those electronics in a while so take advantage of this opportunity and disinfect till your heart’s content!

Typically, using a disinfectant wipe, damp microfiber cloth or electronic cleaning kit will do the trick. However, be careful about getting alcohol near the heart of the electronics. For more information on how to clean these prized possessions, check out our other article that will give you a more in-depth description of how to clean your cell phone!

Are You a Germaphobe? | Toronto Condo Cleaning Service | Maid4Condos

Are You a Germaphobe? | Toronto Condo Cleaning Service | Maid4Condos

Encountering dirt, bacteria and illness is a part of life that you can’t get away from- but are you a germaphobe? The reality is, germs are everywhere. You could practise the best hygiene and have the highest standards of cleanliness- and still take huge precautions against unwanted contamination. Yet you still may not qualify as a germaphobe! Yes, there is a huge difference between being cautious and tidy and suffering from germaphobia, or as the professionals call it- mysophobia.

Are You A Germaphobe? Upside Down
Are You A Germaphobe? Upside Down

Defining Germaphobia

The NHS defines a phobia as a ‘debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal’. The term ‘mysophobia’ was coined in 1879 by Dr. William Alexander Hammond to describe one of his patients who would constantly wash his hands. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Interestingly, those with anxiety and depression running in their family are at higher risk for developing this particular phobia. People with OCD are at a higher risk for developing mysophobia because they may already experience obsessive thoughts about germs, and might already be compulsively cleaning and sanitizing their homes.

Are You A Germaphobe? Sanitizer
Are You A Germaphobe? Sanitizer

However, it’s not just people with OCD who develop the phobia. Just like anything else, the compulsion to clean can be transferred from parent to child. Mysophobia can also be triggered by a trauma like a health scare. Current experts on the subject also say that the increased emphasis on public hygiene items like toilet seat covers and hand sanitizer have contributed to the rise of mysophobia in the United States.

Extremely Clean or Germaphobic?

Being extremely clean and being mysophobic are two different things. For instance, people who suffer from mysophobia have trouble evaluating which situations actually pose a threat to them. So, if you have no trouble going into a grimy public restroom – chances are you’re in the clear! People who suffer from mysophobia tend to feel panic in the most mundane, daily situations that involve germs. Additionally, they will then take extreme measures to avoid the supposed contamination, and decontaminate in spaces they can trust. Take a look at the list below to see if you possess any traits found in mysophobic people:

Signs of Germaphobia

  1. Avoiding places based on their perceived dirtiness
  2. Excessive time spent cleaning & decontamination
  3. Obsessive hand-washing
  4. Avoiding physical contact with others
  5. Refusing to share personal items
  6. Avoiding crowds or animals
  7. Fearing contamination of children
  8. Refusing to use public restroom
  9. Buying numerous cleaning products
  10. Ignorance of extreme exposure to cleaning chemicals

Overcoming Germaphobia

Like any phobia, the hardest part about overcoming mysophobia is learning how to correct irrational thoughts. In this case, thoughts about germs. There are a few ways a person could go about overcoming their fears. Overall, the best thing a person can do is educate themselves, through literature and videos, about how bacteria is a natural part of the environment and our bodies. Understanding the role that bacteria plays in our bodies and in the world may start the process of change.

Are You A Germaphobe? Therapy
Are You A Germaphobe? Therapy

Though educating yourself is important, getting to the bottom of mysophobia usually requires therapy, medication- or a little bit of both. Specifically, antidepressant SSRIs are typically prescribed to help manage feelings of anxiety. All of these methods in conjunction with exposure therapy will help treat mysophobia. Exposure therapy is an important step in the healing process, as it allows individuals change their behavior in increments they feel comfortable with. For instance, increasing the time one takes between showers or hand washings.

The Irony of Germaphobes

Ironically, the cleaning rituals of mysophobia actually make those suffering more susceptible to contamination! Yep, the highly sterile environment that they surround themselves in doesn’t do anything good for their immune system. In fact, extremely sterile environments keep mysophobes from developing immunological resistance to bacteria, making them more susceptible to illness. And, the more a mysophobic person gets sick, the more they feel the need to clean- and so the cycle perpetuates itself endlessly!

Are You A Germaphobe? Mindfulness
Are You A Germaphobe? Mindfulness

As far as phobias go, the fear of germs can be particularly debilitating as it colours every interaction a person has in the world. However, there’s a bright side. It is a very treatable condition. If you surround yourself with the right educative tools and support system, you can learn how to manage your anxieties and go on to live a full and healthy life!

Evict the Mouse in Your House ASAP | Condo Cleaning Service

Evict the Mouse in Your House ASAP | Condo Cleaning Service

If you’re anything like Phoebe Buffay, you need to evict the mouse in your house ASAP. It’s true that certain rodents can look cute as a button, but don’t be fooled. Allowing these pesky critters into your home can have dire consequences. This is especially true during the winter, because just as we cower in our homes when the temperature drops, so do mice. However, instead of an innocent Netflix and chill, little mice and rat babies will wreak havoc on your home and your health. So sit down, and listen up. We’re going to inform you of the chaos that rodents can create, and the ways you can deal with it.

Why To Evict The Mice In Your Home

Eviction Reason #1: Health

As you know, mice are very very tiny. This means they have the ability to slip into your home through cracks and crevices as small as the eraser on the end of a pencil! And once they’re inside…it’s game over- for your health, and your home. How will a few cute critters affect your health? Well, the urine and droppings that mice inevitably leave behind contaminates everything it touches. Not only that, the debris could easily go undetected, which makes you more vulnerable to coming into contact with it. Furthermore, when the urine and droppings come into contact with surfaces in your kitchen and in your food, you’re at a higher risk for contracting diseases like hantavirus, salmonellosis and listeria.

Eviction Reason #2: Home

But it’s not just your health you should be concerned about. Mice are known for extensively damaging personal belongings and furniture. This is because they can chew through just about anything! They’ll start chewing your carpets! Your blankets! Really whatever is lying around and looks tasty. So for god sakes, keep reading because you’re going to need to do some cleaning!

Evict The Mouse In Your House ASAP Peanuts
Evict The Mouse In Your House ASAP Peanuts

And, not only will they chew just about anything. They’ll also eat anything you would eat. For instance, you could set them up with a box of cereal or crackers and it will be gone before dawn! Why is this problematic for you? Think about it. Wouldn’t it be much easier to walk 5 minutes to the grocery store than half an hour? Well, mice feel the exact same way! Because of this, plus the fact that they eat between 15 and 20 times a day, they make their nests near ‘the source’ (a.k.a,  your kitchen or pantry). A clever move by the mice, but their proximity to your food also increases your chances of getting sick.

Cleaning Your House of Mouse

Before you even think about a long-term solution to your mouse problem, you need to clean up any mess you see ASAP. However, be careful how you go about it. Though it may feel like natural instinct to vacuum and sweep droppings and nesting materials you find; this is the last thing you should be doing! Though these methods will get the droppings out of sight, they’ll also release harmful bacteria into the air. Ultimately allowing the bacteria to settle into dust, putting your health in jeopardy.

Evict The Mouse In Your House ASAP House

To properly clean mouse debris, get yourself a mask and pair of latex gloves. Once you’re in gear, pull out a commercial disinfectant or blend some bleach and water together. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention recommends letting the disinfectant sit for at least five minutes before using paper towel to wipe the area. Once you’ve finished wiping, place the dirty paper towels in a plastic bag. Then, take that plastic bag into an outside garbage. Though this is not the greenest method of cleaning, your health and home will thank you!

When Eviction = Death

When you’re trying to get rid of mice for good, you have a few options. You could try out some DIY methods, or you could use the infamous snap traps, bait stations and poison pellets. If you decide to go the old school route and put out snap traps, be sure to place them in areas you suspect mice have been lurking around. Then, to lure them in, spread some peanut butter on a cracker and place it in the trap! From then on, you should be checking the mouse traps daily. But make sure to only remove dead mice if you’re wearing a pair of latex or vinyl gloves!

Evict The Mouse In Your House ASAP Trap

If you’re looking for more humane methods to ward off the pesky rodents, you should look into Ultrasonic sound devices. Devices like the Pet Chaser Pro emit an electronic tone that creates an intensely stressful environment for the mice, forcing them out of your home. The tone is specifically designed to drive out rodents, and so won’t bother you or your pets. However, if your mouse problem seems to be growing by the day, it may be time to call for backup! For a sure-fire way to ride your home of rodents, call a pest control company. Then, you might want to call a cleaning service to come in and do a thorough once over, for a little peace of mind!

3 Clever Ways to Clean Your Aquaphobic Kitty | Cleaning Service Toronto

3 Clever Ways to Clean Your Aquaphobic Kitty | Cleaning Service Toronto

If you’re a proud cat-owner, it’s time for you to learn the 3 clever ways to clean your aquaphobic kitty. Even when they’ve managed to get into the dirtiest of situations, cats are aquaphobes. It’s true that cats clean themselves on the regular, licking themselves here, there and everywhere. However, they also tend to get into precarious situations that require just a little extra cleaning by you, their caring cat parent. If you have a curious cat that is basically allergic to water, there’s a few ways you can clean them- without subjecting them to the horrors of the tap.

Is Cleaning Your Cat Really Necessary?

If you’re a cat parent, you may already know how often your cat licks itself. However, unlike dogs, the act of licking isn’t just for the pleasure of it, it’s their built in cleaning system. Their tongue was built for just for them, rough like sandpaper to allow for maximum dirt removal. Not only do their tongues get the cleaning job done, the act of licking spreads their skin oils throughout their coat, keeping their fur healthy and moist.

3 Clever Ways To Clean Your Aquaphobic Kitty Licking

However, there are some messes that their tongues are not equip to deal with. Plus, if your cat is elderly or overweight they may have trouble cleaning areas they had no trouble reaching when they were younger. Though your kitty’s regular lickings will save them from the dreaded bath, there are times aside from changing the kitty litter when you’ll have to take charge. But that doesn’t necessarily mean turning on the tap and making their nightmares come true! Luckily for you, there are a few ways to get your kitty as clean as a whistle, without ever bringing them near the bath tub.

Dry Shampoo Your Kitty

If you’ve ever used dry shampoo, you know that it’s a great alternative to washing your hair when you don’t have the time or will to hop in the shower. However, you may not know that dry shampoo is also useful for your aquaphobic cat! Don’t let the foamy texture of the shampoo fool you. Because once you’ve sprayed some on your cat and comb or massage it into their fur, the foam will seep in and work its magic. The dry shampoo method is especially great for fidgety cats, as they may not even be able to tell they’re being cleaned!

Wipe Your Kitty

Alternatively, you can use cat wipes to clean your little feline friend! The wipes will allow you to achieve the same effect as a bath, except your cat won’t be scarred for the rest of it’s 9 lives. More importantly, your cat will be able to tolerate the wipes because it will feel like a nice massage! And who doesn’t like a nice massage now and then?

3 Clever Ways To Clean Your Aquaphobic Kitty Relaxing
3 Clever Ways To Clean Your Aquaphobic Kitty Relaxing

If you don’t want to go and buy cat wipes, baby wipes will do the trick. Just like licking, the wipes will spread the skin oils, keeping your kitty’s coat healthy and fresh. However, note you should use this method sparingly. Just like over washing your hands, over wiping your cat can actually dilute their natural oils and make their coat dry. To keep your cat healthy, you should only use the wipes once a week, or even every two weeks.

Brush Your Kitty

Similar to the reasons you brush your own hair, the simplest thing you can do to keep your kitty clean is regular brushing. By giving your cat a helping hand and brushing it regularly, you’ll lessen the time it spends licking which. This in turn will prevent them from swallowing all the hair and dirt that constitutes those hair balls. So, find a brush that your cat doesn’t mind and spend some time brushing! Just make sure the brushing goes down somewhere that’s easy to sweep, as pet dander is a leading dust culprit!

4 Ways Your Server Can Help Remove a Stain Immediately | Maid4Condos

4 Ways Your Server Can Help Remove a Stain Immediately | Maid4Condos

When the worst possible scenario happens at a restaurant you need to be mentally prepared and know the 4 ways your server can help remove a stain immediately. Don’t worry, it’s happened to all of us. You sit down to enjoy a nice meal at your favorite restaurant (i.e. every restaurant) and WHAM! You look down at your shirt, your pants- your life. Low and behold, there’s a colourful mark that was not there before. You’ve been stained.

4 Ways Your Server Can Help Remove A Stain Immediately Dining

Somehow, that little stain has the power to ruin your mindset for the rest of the evening. Maybe you’re wearing new clothes, maybe you’re meeting a new person. Either way, you feel embarrassed. So what is an innocent person to do when they’re uselessly far from home? Well listen up! By simply asking your server for a few common ingredients, that stain will be cleaner in no time.  Feel weird about wanting to be so clean? Don’t! There’s actually some great moral side-effects…

Beating the Stain Game

Ultimately, time is the most important factor when it come to getting a stain out. The quicker you treat the stain the more likely you are to get rid of it, as dry stains are much harder to clean than fresh ones. With this in mind, you need to keep that baby moist by blotting it with a damp napkin. You can do this with the water on your table, if you haven’t drunk it already! Use as much water as you can without soaking your clothes.

4 Ways Your Server Can Help Remove A Stain Immediately Napkins
4 Ways Your Server Can Help Remove A Stain Immediately Napkins

If you find that you accumulate stains endlessly, consider keeping a Tide To-Go pen in your purse or pocket. After all, it is designed specifically to clean stains quickly. But don’t different stains require different cleaning methods? Glad you asked! Yes, yes they do. As the inside person with access to the kitchen, your server will be able to fetch all the ingredients you need.  If you plan to use the tap in the restroom during the cleaning process, brush up on the 5 tips you need to know about public restrooms. You’ll thank us later, we promise.

Don’t Whine over Red Wine

Whether you indulge in Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec there’s an effective stain solution you can implement right from your table! First things first, order some club soda. While you wait for the fizzy drank to arrive and soak up all the spilled wine you can with your napkin. Assuming your server is attentive, your club soda will be ready once you’re finished.

4 Ways Your Server Can Help Remove A Stain Immediately Wine

Next, blot the club soda on the stain and then apply a generous layer of salt to the area and let it sit for as long as possible. Once you can’t stand sitting in the salty mess any longer, brush it off! The area may not be perfectly clean, but a cycle in the wash will finish the job. And by wash we mean washing machine- for god sakes don’t put your clothes in the dishwasher!

Grease Lightning

Unfortunately, finding grease on your pants isn’t as much fun as finding Grease on Netflix. Just like red wine, the first step to clean is wiping away as much excess grease as possible with your napkin, so that you’re just left with a moist mark. Next, ask your server to bring over some artificial sweetener. Yep, you heard that right. Tap some of the fine powder out onto the affected area. (Though the powder won’t be as fine as Olivia Newton John, it’s perfect for soaking up the oiliness). Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work right away. It may take a few packets of sweetener and many a blotting for this method to work!

Ketchup Catastrophe

Everyone knows that the coolest people love ketchup, which means the coolest people are also the most vulnerable to ketchup stains.  When this happens to you, run the stain under cold water and then ask your server for some white vinegar. The vinegar, which is made of water and acetic acid will do just the trick by dissolving the ketchup residue without damaging the fabric of your clothes. Use the trusty vinegar to blot at the stain, removing as much as you can. Before you throw it in the wash, dilute some laundry detergent and apply it on the affected area. Then throw it in the wash to get clean and forget about it until next time! You ketchup fiend, you.

Coffee & Tea Referee

Ah, coffee and tea- the part of the meal you’ve been waiting for. This after meal ritual is a nice way to wind down and get your final conversations out. You’ve made it through the entire dinner stain free, yet somehow… you’ve managed to muck up your clothing right before you’re in the clear. Don’t panic! Just ask your server for some white vinegar, as you would for a ketchup stain. Once you get your hands on that liquid gold, swirl a little in with some water. Dip your napkin into the solution and dab repeatedly until you can’t dab anymore. Once you get home, apply some detergent and then throw it in the washing machine for maximum clean!

The 3 Dust Culprits in Your Bedroom | Downtown Toronto Cleaning Service

The 3 Dust Culprits in Your Bedroom | Downtown Toronto Cleaning Service

Are the 3 dust culprits in your bedroom making you feel like you’re constantly enveloped in a dust-cloud? You know those times when the sun beams in through your window? You can see all the little dust particles swirling around! Or what about when you go to pick up something just to have to blow the dust off? Unfortunately, no matter how clean your home is, dust always seems to find its way into the picture. Though it’s a struggle everyone must face, why do you need to live in a horror film?

On top of that, dust is not just a mere annoyance. It can be particularly harmful for people who suffer from asthma, allergies or other breathing problems. How rude! Though there’s many inevitable things that make up the dust in the air (like hair, skin cells, and fabric fibers) there are ways to minimize the dust you produce and clean your bedroom more efficiently!

The Dust In Your Bedroom

Like all dust ever, the dust in your bedroom contains dust mites. These weeny, microscopic bugs live off of the dead skin cells that we and our furry friends shed. In fact, researchers at Ohio State University found that a used mattress contains at least 100,000 of these little guys! Though the mites are pretty harmless to most people, they can trigger allergic reactions in those prone to asthma, and those allergic to the mites themselves!

So where do these dust mites love to hide and how should we combat them? Glad you asked! We’ll reveal the 3 biggest places dust mites are hiding and how you can combat them! But first, we need to tell you that the overarching way reduce dust in your bedroom is by cleaning it, once a week. Yep, the floors, curtains, furniture, window frames…even the tops of doors. If you’re stressing about the time factor but prioritize clean living, consider calling a cleaning service!  However, there a few things you can do on your own to minimize the dust you collect on the daily.

Dust Culprit #1: Your Bed is Dust

Sorry to scare you, but your cozy bed is a major bedroom-dust culprit. Not only does your bed contain a lot of dust, it distributes dust around the room! Constantly.  And your bed isn’t only shedding the residue that comes off of you and your pets, it’s shedding its own fibres too.  Yep, all that stuff we call dust swirls around your bedroom every time you fluff your covers up or dive into them headfirst after a long day of work. Great.

When you’re ready to minimize the dust factor of your bed, start washing your sheets and pillows once a week! For simple ¨clean as you go” bed care, shake your sheets out when you’re making your bed in the morning to get any dust off. Similarly, give your pillows a good wack and fluff them up! Because at the end of the day, keeping your bed as clean as possible is the key to minimizing dust!

Dust Culprit #2: Your Closet is Dust

Because your closet holds all your towels, bedding, clothing and shoes, it’s a dust haven filled with all sorts of things from dust bunnies to floating fibres! The more stuff and clutter you have sitting around, the more chance there is for dust to collect. In fact, every time you open the closet door you unleash a tiny invisible dust storm  into your bedroom! Don’t think you can go on like this? I don’t blame you. There’s a simple solution: keep your closet clean and organized.

The 3 Dust Culprits in Your Bedroom Closet

Kick off the bedroom closet cleaning with a good purge, because the less items you have, the less stuff there is to shed and host dust! Once you’ve cleaned out your closet and given it a good wipe down, consider putting your items in boxes or containers to keep things tidy and organized. If you’re using your closet as a storage space for old winter coats, consider placing them in garment bags. That way, their fibres won’t shed and contribute to the overall dustiness of your closet!

Dust Hack: when you’re vacuuming the area, remember to pick up any shoes that may be on the floor. Dust bunnies love to accumulate near shoes, so move them aside and get in there to extinguish all the dust from your closet!

Dust Culprit #3: Your Air is Dust

At the end of the day, a little dust is inevitable. And it’s no secret that the air in your home just isn’t the cleanest. With this in mind, your job is to be on the defensive. When it comes to reducing general bedroom dust, you’ll want to think about air filters. Apartment Therapy recommends using an HEPA (high efficiency particulate absorption) air filter. However, you can also purify the air by getting dust eating house plants! Just remember that indoor plants require much more commitment from you than a filter does, especially in the winter.

The Candle Wax Solution You’ll Melt Over | Toronto Residential Cleaning

The Candle Wax Solution You’ll Melt Over | Toronto Residential Cleaning

There’s going to be a lot of candles burning in the city of Toronto this winter, which is why we have to tell you the candle wax solution you’ll melt over! There’s really nothing like the element of fire to warm a human up. But wait- oh no! Some wax seems to have dripped…Perhaps you were doing a craft project or maybe you were entertaining guests with elegant candlesticks. Whatever the reason, you have some melted wax on, well, everything! But relax. We’re going to help you figure out exactly what to do when candle wax spills in your home whether it’s Halloween, Christmas or just another Tuesday evening.

The Candle Wax Solution You’ll Melt Over Candles
The Candle Wax Solution You’ll Melt Over Candles

The good news is candle wax is pretty easy to remove from most things. However, trouble starts when it drips onto carpet or fabric. But that doesn’t mean cleaning up candle wax is impossible, so you can calm down your inner neat freak! In fact, with a few DIY tricks you’ll have that wax out of your favorite rug or candle stick holder in no time! (If you’re not sure where you sit on the neat freak spectrum, take a look at these photos, and you’ll have your answer).

Here are our candle was solutions:

Solution: Hot or Cold?

Weirdly enough, it’s better to spill more candle wax than only a little. And that’s because, once the wax dries, it’s becomes really easy to pull up the large pieces! However, watch out for the small or thin speckles and streaks of wax, they will prove more challenging. But not impossible. When it comes to cleaning up candle wax, you’re going to be employing the ‘hot’ or ‘cold’ methods, depending on the surface your treating!

The Candle Wax Solution You’ll Melt Over Hot Cold
The Candle Wax Solution You’ll Melt Over Hot Cold

Hot Method: This method is meant for surfaces like vinyl, glass, carpet, painted walls, fabric and leather. It involves using a hair dryer on low to medium heat to melt the candle wax. Alternatively, you could go the clothes iron and paper bag route! All you have to do is place a paper bag flat over the wax spill and run a clothes iron on a low heat over the bag.

Cold Method: This method is meant for surfaces like wood, carpet and objects. The cold method is wildly simple, as all you have to do is freeze the wax! So either you bring the wax to the freezer, or the freezer to the wax. To bring the freezer to the wax, simply place an ice pack or ice cube on the wax spill. Alternatively, you could simply place the waxed object inside the freezer. Once the candle wax has hardened, use a butter knife from the kitchen to chip away! However, the truth is that the hot and cold methods are not separate and you’ll probably end up using a combination of the two, depending on the scale of damage.

Wax on, Wax off: Fabric & Carpet

If you are witnessing a carpet-wax spill as it’s happening, grab some paper towels but resist the urge to rub, as rubbing causes the candle wax to spread deeper in the fabric. Instead, simply pat the paper towels down on top of the wax spill! If you’re too late and the wax has hardened, use the cold method and chip at it using a butter knife. See, cleaning up candle wax isn’t so hard!

Alternatively, instead of waiting for the candle wax to dry, you could take matters into your hands and go the hot route! If wax has spilled onto fabric, carpet or piece of clothing, you don’t have to worry. As we outlined in the hot method, get a paper bag & a clothes iron (or blow dryer) to start removing the candle wax stain! Lastly, touch some laundry detergent directly on the stain and then throw it in the washer (if it fits)!

Wax on, Wax off: Wood & Brick

If you have a candle wax spill on a brick mantle, it’s not the end of the world! However, you need to be use the cold method when you go to clean it up. The cold method requires you to  freeze the wax and then scrape away with a butter knife. Once you’ve finished, give it some time to sit. Then, come back and wash the residue away with warm soapy water!

The Candle Wax Solution You’ll Melt Over Brick
The Candle Wax Solution You’ll Melt Over Brick

If you’re trying to get candle wax off of wood, you’re going to be using the hot method. But this time, all you’ll need is a blow dryer and a cloth! Yes, you can use the same blow drier you use for your soggy dog! When it comes to cleaning up candle wax off wood, use the blow dryer to soften the wax and then wipe away with a soft cloth. However, depending on the quality of the wood, you may be able to get away with the cold method!

Wax on, Wax Off: Candle Holders

When it comes to cleaning up candle wax from inside candle holders and jars, you can use whichever method you prefer! If you’re into the cold method, put your items in the freezer and wait until the wax has frozen and loosened. Then, just tap the holder or jar against your counter so the candle wax can fall out! Alternatively, you could use the hot method, which involves placing the items in the microwave or on the stove. Doing so will melt the candle wax, leaving you to wipe out the remains with a cloth. The 4 NYE Party Mistakes You Should Avoid | Maid4Condos Maid Service

The 4 NYE Party Mistakes You Should Avoid | Maid4Condos Maid Service

If you’re the brave soul hosting this New Year’s shindig, we’re going to let you in on the 4 NYE party mistakes you should avoid! New Years Eve comes with high expectations, so obviously you want your party to be perfect. Don’t we all.  Good thing there’s a whole internet to teach us the ways of the party gods! The truth is, hosting isn’t easy, and trying to juggle everything from food and drinks to music and social flow can be exhausting.

The 4 NYE Party Mistakes You Should Avoid Balloons

However, you can arm yourself with knowledge before you go into a hosting frenzy! Read on to learn about the four common party hosting mistakes you should avoid at your NYE extravaganza. But first, you have to brush up on the ultimate party hosting hack that will make your party better before your guests even arrive. Go ahead, we’ll be waiting in this tab while that hyperlink opens up!

Avoid these 4 mistakes this New Years Party:

Mistake #1: The Social Role of Food

Don’t be fooled by food. It’s not there because people are hungry. At a party, food is commonly used as a social tool for people to keep themselves occupied or to excuse themselves from social situations. Additionally, it’s awkward to walk into a party where there’s no food. Ultimately, just like cleaning, food is welcoming and will make your guests feel more comfortable in your space!

However, don’t expect all of your guests to just help themselves to whatever you’ve set out!  If you have drinks or appetizers you’ve prepared for them, point it out so that they’re in the loop! If you’re having trouble coming up with appetizer ideas, don’t worry about trying out exotic new recipes, your guests will be happy as clams with the classics. Sitting snug as pugs in your clean living room!

Mistake #2: The Flow

The role you play in facilitating the social flow of your NYE party will depend on who you’ve invited. For instance, if you’ve invited people from different social groups, you’ll have to make sure to introduce them around before going about your hosting duties. Because, it can be daunting for guests who’ve come to your NYE party alone! So, to make them feel acknowledged and welcome, introduce them to some of the people you wanted them to meet. After all, you did invite them!

Mistake #3: The Music

Don’t underestimate music. In fact, it’s arguably one of the biggest concerns you should have when prepping for your NYE party! You know well enough that there’s nothing like awkward silence to kill a good party. Additionally, music also a great tool to facilitate socialization amongst new or old friends alike, filling those inevitable lags in conversation.  Plus, if you’re going for a theme, music can totally set the mood for the party!

So before your guests arrive, curate a playlist (or find one on Spotify) that will help create the atmosphere you want. Just remember to choose music that works in the background and isn’t too overpowering! For instance, you might be going for a vibe that requires rock, reggae, or jazz. Additionally, consider the age group attending and how “clean” the music should be! Lastly, if you live in a condo and are planning to play your music louder than usual, consider warning your neighbours before they start to hate you!

Mistake #4: Being a Stress Case

Ultimately, the vibe of the party is in your hands. Like a stressed driver can cause stress amongst their passengers, so too can a stressed host ruin the experience for their guests. Yep, stress is contagious. So even if you’ve been racing around trying to get this NYE party organized, once the time finally comes to welcome guests into your home, you need to loosen up and go with the flow!

That means, if something goes wrong like a drink spill- don’t overreact. It will just ruin the atmosphere and make your friends feel uncomfortable. Instead, glide elegantly through the night like the brave host you are. At the end of the day, parties definitely qualify as one of the four essential times you need to hire a professional cleaning service. And Maid4Condos will be here for you every time. (Just an FYI,  we have cleaning promotions going on all time- so watch out!)

5 Clothing Essentials for Cold Weather Cycling | Best Maid Service Toronto

5 Clothing Essentials for Cold Weather Cycling | Best Maid Service Toronto

If you implement the 5 clothing essentials for cold weather cycling, winter biking can be amazing! Imagine… getting up early enough, the clean snow reflecting the morning sun, muffling all the sounds around you. You ride in silence. However, whether the sun is out or not, the weather can be bitingly cold, which means it’s time for you to layer up for cycling! There’s an old saying that goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. But you already know that, because you’re a winter biking warrior. So unless you want to be as soggy as your doggy, let’s delve into this clothing guide to cold weather cycling!

5 Clothing Essentials for Cold Weather Cycling Bike

Winter Weather Biking Essentials:

Essential #1: Layers

Wearing multiple layers is essential in winter, but even more so when it comes to cold weather cycling. Though it will be cold out, even 10 minutes of pedaling will warm you up. So layering, a.k.a wearing easily removable layers, provides you with a lot of climate control on your ride. In fact, for the warmest ride, you should have three layers on the top half of your body and two on the bottom.

On the top half, you should start with a base layer. A thin, sweat resistant later like an Under-Armour compression shirt (long-sleeved). The sweat-resistant fabric will be perfect for keeping your skin dry and clean of sweat. Layering with the right fabric is key, because it allows you to feel cozy at the start of your trip.

Essential #2: Jacket

There are some great cold weather cycling jackets out there, but consensus says that you should get a waterproof and windproof cycling jacket. The wind can be especially brutal in Toronto, and choosing a good quality jacket right for you is absolutely essential. The dilemma you face is choosing something waterproof that also offers breathability. The good news is, many high quality fabrics tend to be water proof and breathable at the same time! We recommend giving the Gore Bikewear Power Goretex Active a shot, mainly because it has a high neck and long sleeves, with Velcro and the wrist to keep the warm air in!

Essential #3: Legs

You may have your own routine when it comes to your legs. However, you might want to think about bib tights under your pants, or tights over bib shorts. In addition, if you don’t have fenders or simply take pride in your appearance, you may want to invest in a pair of waterproof pants to make sure you get to where you’re going slush-free. Whatever pants you choose to wear cold weather cycling, remember to tuck them into your shoe or sock! There’s nothing worse than a cleaning a pant leg caught in a chain.

Essential #4: Head Gear

Did you know that keeping your head warm and dry is one of the smartest things you can do? Just kidding, it’s a myth that heat escapes through your head. However, cold weather cycling in Toronto is not a walk in the park and so you should actually be wearing a hat whether you use a helmet or not. There are plenty of skull-cap style hats that fit nice and clean under a helmet. Plus, if you’re into the headband or earmuff look, there are lots of options that will keep your ears toasty as you stay fit this winter!

Essential #5: Gloves

One bike ride without gloves is one too many. In fact, it’s downright dangerous. What are you supposed to do when your fingers are frozen on your handlebars, and you need to break? Luckily, there’s many cycling-compatible gloves on the market that will keep your hands warm, clean and dry! There’s plenty of designs, you just have to choose the one that suits you. Lastly, you should look for gloves with longer cuffs. You’ll be able to tuck them into the arms of your jacket, and strap it down with the jacket’s wrist Velcro, and retain all the heat.
