The good news is candle wax is pretty easy to remove from most things. However, trouble starts when it drips onto carpet or fabric. But that doesn’t mean cleaning up candle wax is impossible, so you can calm down your inner neat freak! In fact, with a few DIY tricks you’ll have that wax out of your favorite rug or candle stick holder in no time! (If you’re not sure where you sit on the neat freak spectrum, take a look at these photos, and you’ll have your answer).

Here are our candle was solutions:

Solution: Hot or Cold?

Weirdly enough, it’s better to spill more candle wax than only a little. And that’s because, once the wax dries, it’s becomes really easy to pull up the large pieces! However, watch out for the small or thin speckles and streaks of wax, they will prove more challenging. But not impossible. When it comes to cleaning up candle wax, you’re going to be employing the ‘hot’ or ‘cold’ methods, depending on the surface your treating!

Hot Method: This method is meant for surfaces like vinyl, glass, carpet, painted walls, fabric and leather. It involves using a hair dryer on low to medium heat to melt the candle wax. Alternatively, you could go the clothes iron and paper bag route! All you have to do is place a paper bag flat over the wax spill and run a clothes iron on a low heat over the bag.

Cold Method: This method is meant for surfaces like wood, carpet and objects. The cold method is wildly simple, as all you have to do is freeze the wax! So either you bring the wax to the freezer, or the freezer to the wax. To bring the freezer to the wax, simply place an ice pack or ice cube on the wax spill. Alternatively, you could simply place the waxed object inside the freezer. Once the candle wax has hardened, use a butter knife from the kitchen to chip away! However, the truth is that the hot and cold methods are not separate and you’ll probably end up using a combination of the two, depending on the scale of damage.

Wax on, Wax off: Fabric & Carpet

If you are witnessing a carpet-wax spill as it’s happening, grab some paper towels but resist the urge to rub, as rubbing causes the candle wax to spread deeper in the fabric. Instead, simply pat the paper towels down on top of the wax spill! If you’re too late and the wax has hardened, use the cold method and chip at it using a butter knife. See, cleaning up candle wax isn’t so hard!

Alternatively, instead of waiting for the candle wax to dry, you could take matters into your hands and go the hot route! If wax has spilled onto fabric, carpet or piece of clothing, you don’t have to worry. As we outlined in the hot method, get a paper bag & a clothes iron (or blow dryer) to start removing the candle wax stain! Lastly, touch some laundry detergent directly on the stain and then throw it in the washer (if it fits)!

Wax on, Wax off: Wood & Brick

If you have a candle wax spill on a brick mantle, it’s not the end of the world! However, you need to be use the cold method when you go to clean it up. The cold method requires you to  freeze the wax and then scrape away with a butter knife. Once you’ve finished, give it some time to sit. Then, come back and wash the residue away with warm soapy water!

If you’re trying to get candle wax off of wood, you’re going to be using the hot method. But this time, all you’ll need is a blow dryer and a cloth! Yes, you can use the same blow drier you use for your soggy dog! When it comes to cleaning up candle wax off wood, use the blow dryer to soften the wax and then wipe away with a soft cloth. However, depending on the quality of the wood, you may be able to get away with the cold method!

Wax on, Wax Off: Candle Holders

When it comes to cleaning up candle wax from inside candle holders and jars, you can use whichever method you prefer! If you’re into the cold method, put your items in the freezer and wait until the wax has frozen and loosened. Then, just tap the holder or jar against your counter so the candle wax can fall out! Alternatively, you could use the hot method, which involves placing the items in the microwave or on the stove. Doing so will melt the candle wax, leaving you to wipe out the remains with a cloth.
