13 Cleaning Facts You Should Know

While cleaning isn’t necessarily the most enjoyable and exciting activity for most people, learning some life hacks and essential cleaning facts can help make cleaning around the house a little more tolerable. Here, we’ll discuss 13 cleaning facts you should know, regardless of whether you’re a cleaning connoisseur or amateur (or neither).

cleaning facts you should know

Burn Baby Burn

For instance, did you know that cleaning for just two hours can burn off 200 calories? Of course, that’s assuming that you put in some vigorous effort. In any event, why not kill two birds with one stone and burn some calories mopping the floor instead of riding the dreaded elliptical in your makeshift gym?

A Woman’s Job is Never Done

Did you know that the average woman in North America will spend 12,896 hours of her life cleaning? This is in stark comparison to the average amount of time men will spend cleaning before they die: a paltry 6,448 hours. That is, the average woman will spend an additional 6,448 hours, or literally twice as many hours, cleaning compared to her male counterpart. Is it any wonder why men have so much more time for R&R compared to their overworked spouses?

Ice Ice Baby

Curious to know which country currently holds the record for cleanest country on the planet? That title belongs to the frigid, remote country known as Iceland. Hence, if dirt is a serious issue for you, perhaps consider relocating to Iceland. Just remember to dress warmly.

The Kitchen Sink Stinks

Unbeknownst to most, the average kitchen sink is actually far dirtier than the average toilet bowl. Now, when we are referring to dirtier we mean more germ-laden. The reason is simple: most people don’t clean their kitchen sinks as often as their toilet bowls, if at all. Remember that a simple rinse will not suffice to keep your kitchen sink clean and sparkling, so put in some elbow grease (and perhaps a generous dollop of Vim) to take care of those pesky germs.

The Sin of Dead Skin

This one will really make your skin crawl. Did you know that nearly 80% of the dust particles flying about are actually made of dead skin cells? Think of all those disgusting harmful particles that you and your children are breathing in on a daily basis and its little wonder why asthma and other respiratory conditions are on the rise.

Dust Mites Bite

If you’ve ever had a better reason to sleep on the floor this is it…Did you know that a conventional bedroom mattress contains between 100,000 to ten million dust mites? In fact, 10% of the weight of an average pillow consists of dead dust mites and their excrement. Where’s a handy hazmat suit when you need one?

Listerine For Clean

Who knew that your trusty mouthwash can do more than just kill germs and freshen breath? In reality, you can actually use your mouthwash to clean your floors. The great news is that you don’t even need a lot if you run out of cleaner. Simply add a cap of Listerine or a similar type of mouthwash per gallon of water and you’re all set.

Jerry Had the Right Idea

We would highly recommend that you close your toilet lid before you flush the toilet; this is because failure to do so will result in a plethora of malevolent bacteria and microbes spraying into the air. So if you want your toothbrush to not become a germ factory close that lid before you bid.

Catch Up with Ketchup

Ketchup goes great with fries and virtually any salty snack but did you know that it can also be used to clean your silverware? All you need to do is take your tarnished silverware and place it in a bowl of ketchup for five to ten minutes. Afterwards, simply remove the silverware, scrub with a soft bristle brush and rinse with water.

That Disney Clean Feeling

When most people think of Disney World they think of a fantastical place of wonder, where one’s wildest dreams can become a marvelous reality. However, you may be surprised to know that Disney World does nearly 300,000 pounds of laundry every day. To put that number into startling perspective, if a person washed and dried a load every day it would still take them 44 years to tie Disney’s daily laundry weight.

Beautify Your Home, Beautify Your Soul

With global warming and outdoor pollution making headlines, many people have been focusing on keeper their inner sanctum spic and span to compensate. However, the type of products they use to clean their home can make or break their mission, as using the wrong cleaning products can make the air quality indoors up to 500% worse that the air quality outdoors. To avoid harmful toxins from harming you and your loved ones, opt for all-natural cleaning products. While more expensive, the vast improvement in air quality is well worth the price of admission.

Call the Mayo Clinic

Mayonnaise is one of the most popular condiments on the planet, although we never quite understood its popularity with fries in Europe. In any event mayonnaise can also be used to eliminate water marks on wood surfaces. To do so, simply cover the spot with two tablespoons of the delicious condiment and let it sit overnight. Then, simply wipe the wood clean when dawn breaks and treat yourself to an egg salad sandwich for breakfast.

An Inconvenient Truth

On a more serious note, studies have found that 75% of all communicable diseases are caused by unhygienic food handling. So remember to clean your fruits, meats and veggies thoroughly, as a thorough wash can be the difference between life and death.

We hope you’ve enjoyed these (mostly) fun cleaning facts. Impress your friends with your knowledge and become the hit of the party. Or maybe your guests will look at you like you’re crazy. But that’s fine: we all go a little crazy from time to time.

How to Make Your own DIY Disinfectant Spray

Buying cleaning supplies is one of those things none of us want to do, much less spend money on. The price of these items can add up over time; an extra $40 or $50 a month can throw your monthly budget off kilter when you’re trying to balance what seems like a million and one expenses. Not to mention, it’s hard to find products that aren’t harmful to the environment. So why not DIY your way to an inexpensive cleaning solution that will keep your home sparkling, your wallet full, and the environment green?

How To Make Your Own DIY Disinfectant Spray

Making a DIY disinfectant spray is easier than you may think and it can be effective if you use the right ingredients. Not convinced you should try using a DIY disinfectant around your home? Take a look at some of the benefits.

Benefits of Using a DIY Disinfectant

  1. Easy and Effective
Not all DIY’s take hours to complete, and end up being a dud. Making your own disinfectant will only take a few minutes, and all you’ll need is a few ingredients and a spray bottle. Worried that your homemade mixture won’t get rid of 99.9% of germs like your store-bought products claim to? Homemade cleaning products are just as effective as those you can buy in-store, so you don’t need to think twice about whether the counter you just wiped is actually clean.
  2. Affordable
A huge selling point for pretty much all DIY’s is that they cost less than buying the ready-made product, and a DIY disinfectant isn’t an exception. You can spend a fraction of what you would on brand-name cleaning products when you opt to make your own cleaning solution. A few dollars here and there doesn’t seem like much at first, but think about it — you’ll always need to buy cleaning products. If you make the switch and begin making your own disinfectant now, think about how much money you’ll save in a few years time.
  3. Safe
Many store-bought cleaning products are made from chemicals that are hard to even pronounce, much less know whether they’re safe or not. When you make your own disinfectant spray, you’ll know exactly which ingredients are in it, and that it’s safe for your family. You won’t need to worry about your toddler eating right off their high-chair tray and ingesting harmful chemicals; your natural, homemade solution will give you peace of mind that’s virtually priceless.
  4. Environmentally friendly
In addition to being safe for your family, your DIY disinfectant will be safe for the environment. Manufacturers often use chemicals in their cleaning products that evaporate into the air, but still pose a threat to both indoor and outdoor air quality. When you use a homemade mixture, you won’t have to feel guilty about damaging the environment.
  5. Customizable
It can be tough to find the perfect cleaning product; some are too harsh, and others are too gentle to give you the germ-free environment you’re looking for. When you create your own solution, you’ll be able to control exactly how strong or weak it is. Maybe you want a gentle disinfectant for the living room, but something a little stronger for the bathroom; when you opt for a DIY disinfectant, you can make custom multi-purpose cleaners for every room!

Making a DIY Disinfectant Spray

There are a few different ways to make your own DIY disinfectant, each with a varying base ingredient. Take a look at these homemade cleaners, and see which one might be right for you.

Vinegar-Based

In a standard spray bottle, add 1 part water, 1 part vinegar, and 5-15 drops of essential oil. You can customize and mix scents to your liking, and use gentler scents like chamomile and vanilla in areas where you’re not concerned about eliminating odours. It’s important to note that sometimes essential oils can react with plastic, so it’s best to use a glass bottle.

Vodka-Based

Add ½ cup vodka and ½ cup of water into a measuring cup. Add 50 drops of your choice of essential oil, and then pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Be sure to give it a good shake each time before using the spray.

Rubbing Alcohol and Hydrogen Peroxide-Based

This one is pretty simple. Combine one part water and one part rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle, and shake to mix the ingredients. This is a highly effective disinfectant and is often used on medical devices. However, you should be aware that the smell is exactly inviting and this solution should be used where killing germs is a priority.

Disinfectant Wipes

There’s no denying the convenience of disinfectant wipes. You can use them on countertops, stoves, and even to disinfect your phone. However, since most of us use them by the bundle, it might be worth trying to make your own. To make your own disinfectant wipes, follow these simple steps:

Add 1 part water, 1 part vinegar, and 5-15 drops of essential oil to a glass jar. Cut 10-15 pieces of cloth into squares the size you’d like your wipes to be, and place them inside the jar of cleaner. Press the cloths down so that they’re submerged, and put the lid on the jar. The cloth with soak up the cleaner, so be sure to wring out excess liquid before using them.

Making your own cleaning ingredients is great practice; it’ll benefit the environment, your family, not to mention save you money on your monthly cleaning supplies. However, cleaning your home yourself can become overwhelming, and sometimes you need a little help — that’s where Maid4Condos comes in. When you’re busy with work and your personal life, you can count on us to get your home in pristine condition. Call Maid4Condos at 647.822.0601 for an estimate today, or contact us here.

4 Cleaning Tricks That Will Impress Your In-Laws | Clean My Condo in Toronto

4 Cleaning Tricks That Will Impress Your In-Laws | Clean My Condo in Toronto

If you’re here to learn about the 4 cleaning tricks to impress your in-laws, you’ve come to the right place! Because, when you’re living with your significant other, it’s inevitable that their parents will come for a visit. And whether you like hosting or not, there are some things you should be doing to get ready for the ‘big day’. Though your place may never be perfectly clean, there are a few simple last-minute things you can do that will give the appearance of cleanliness for those few hours!

Our Cleaning Tricks to Host The In-Laws:

Trick #1: The Bathroom

Even if you’re okay with an almost-finished bottle or bar of soap, it may give your in-laws the impression that you’re lazy. So, to give the appearance of being fully functioning humans, replace any almost-finished sanitary items ike soap and toilet paper, before they arrive. Not only will your in-laws be impressed by the stock of your bathroom, you’ll be living large after they’ve left!

In addition, make sure you empty your garbage can. As we mentioned in our other article about how to keep your bathroom looking clean, a full garbage bin can really trash the clean look you’re going for. At the end of the day, replenishing soap, toilet paper and emptying your garbage can are quick ways to give your bathroom the clean and uncluttered look your in-laws will appreciate!

 Trick #2: The Smell

Maybe you have a cat, maybe you have a dog…or maybe your place just doesn’t smell that great. However, even if your home doesn’t necessarily smell all that bad, it’s time to pull out any scented candles or oil diffusers you’ve stashed away. Why? Because the smell and air in your home is the first thing people notice.

4 Cleaning Tricks That Will Impress Your In Laws Fragrance
4 Cleaning Tricks That Will Impress Your In Laws Fragrance

There are two general rules when it comes to choosing a scent: consistency and likability. In other words, refrain from mixing scents. Instead, stick to those that are light, seasonal and well-liked by the general public. So no, cinnamon won’t do. If you’re having trouble trying to think of which scent to use, check our aromatherapy article! Plus, if you want to add an extra oomph to the overall smell and aesthetic of your home, strategically place aromatic flowers near the entrance way or on the table. Not only will your in-laws be impressed by your décor, you’ll have flowers for the week to come!

Trick #3: The Kitchen

When it comes to cleaning your kitchen, you don’t have to go overboard. Instead, you should be focusing on a short list of key areas. For example, give more attention to surfaces that accumulate the most fingerprints and dust (A.K.A. the fridge, counter tops, handles and table). Just grab your favorite disinfectant or home-made vinegar cleaning remedy and wipe away!

4 Cleaning Tricks That Will Impress Your In Laws Sink
4 Cleaning Tricks That Will Impress Your In Laws Sink

Next, make sure that your sink and drying rack are clear of dishes. Whether your dishes are clean or dirty, having them sitting out in the sink or drying rack will make your kitchen look cluttered- especially if you live in a condo. So, put all clean dishes away and throw all dirty ones in the dishwasher. However, if you don’t have time or a dishwasher, stash the dirty dishes in a cupboard until your in-laws have left. They won’t know the difference, but they will know that your kitchen looks on point!

Trick #4: General Clutter

Clutter can be an issue, especially if you’re a maximalist. However, there’s a sure-fire way to get clean up your clutter before the rents arrive. Well, you have two options. Option one: organize the clutter. For instance, stack all loose books together, line up all discarded shoes, throw all pencils and pens into a cup- you get the picture.

Option 2: hide it! You heard right. Throw all that unwanted clutter into empty drawers and closets that your in-laws won’t be dipping their paws into. Voila, instant clean! When the ‘big day’ comes, use those few hours to enjoy your in-laws company, but more importantly- experience what minimalist living feels like.

The Post-Sickness Cleaning Checklist You Need | Maid in Toronto

The Post-Sickness Cleaning Checklist You Need | Maid in Toronto

There’s always something going around, and whether you or someone you live with caught that cold or flu, you’ve got to nip it in the bud with the post-sickness cleaning checklist you need. Because, don’t you want to save others from the same, sickly fate? In the best of times, germs are everywhere and relatively harmless. In the worst of times, they are multiplying, just waiting for a host to latch on to. So, when your home gets invaded by unwanted bacteria it’s time to pull out your bucket of home cleaning supplies and get down to business!

The Cleaning Checklist: Feel Better!

Clean the Bedroom

When you’re sick, all you want to do is lay in bed. The trouble is that the bedroom is now contaminated, but it’s not beyond repair. When it comes to surfaces like door handles, light switches and bedside tables simply pull out your favorite commercial disinfectant, or create a home cleaning remedy out of vinegar. For maximum clean, these spots will need your full attention and a good wipe down with a microfiber cloth! Same goes for any other surfaces around your home like railings, counters and door knobs. Simple, easy, done!

The Post Sickness Cleaning Checklist You Need Bed

However, blankets and bedding will take a little more effort. Because sick people sweat more than the average person, strip the affected bed of sheets and throw them all in the wash. Be sure to add all garments and blankets that were used during the incubation period. Nothing should be left behind! If you catch any stains prior to washing, be sure to treat them so as to maximize cleanliness once they’ve been laundered. Lastly, set the laundry machine to the hottest temperature and wash away!

Clean the Bathroom

When it comes to cleaning after being sick, the bathroom is one of the most important areas you need to be worried about. Because it’s a shared space, it holds high potential for infecting other people. With that said, you should be cleaning the entire bathroom, with special attention on the sink, toilet, flush handle, and tap handles.

The Post Sickness Cleaning Checklist You Need Ducks

You can use your favorite commercial cleaner or opt for a home-made remedy. However, did you know that steam cleaners are also a great way to get rid of the germs? Yep, the steam cleaner is great at getting into those hard-to-reach crannies around the toilet and tap. However, for a maximum clean, spray a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water prior to steaming and let it sit for a few minutes. Then steam away!

Clean the Kitchen

Just like the bathroom, the kitchen is a hot-spot for germs to accumulate, because even sick people need to eat! When you go to clean the kitchen, focus on things like the refrigerator door handle, and all cabinet and drawer handles that get frequently touched. You can use disinfectant wipes, your favorite commercial cleaner, or a home-made mixture of your choosing. And yes, you can also use your steam cleaner in the kitchen! But again, you should spray the surface with a cleaner, let it sit, and then steam away. All that’s left to do is wipe the handles down with a dampened microfiber cloth!

Clean the Electronics

Though it may seem like a mission and a half, cleaning electronics after an illness is super important. That goes for any cell phones, computers, keyboards and remotes that the sick person has touched. However, you probably haven’t cleaned those electronics in a while so take advantage of this opportunity and disinfect till your heart’s content!

The Post Sickness Cleaning Checklist You Need Electronics

Typically, using a disinfectant wipe, damp microfiber cloth or electronic cleaning kit will do the trick. However, be careful about getting alcohol near the heart of the electronics. For more information on how to clean these prized possessions, check out our other article that will give you a more in-depth description of how to clean your cell phone!

Does Toronto Have a Litter Problem? | DownTown Toronto Maid Service

Does Toronto Have a Litter Problem? | DownTown Toronto Maid Service

If you live in the city, you are no stranger to litter. So we have to ask: does Toronto have a litter problem? Though people visiting Toronto call it clean, residents see so much litter on a daily basis, it’s just become a part of our lives.

Does Toronto Have a Litter Problem? Coke Can
Does Toronto Have a Litter Problem? Coke Can

But of course, it’s not just a Toronto problem. Litter has become so prevalent worldwide that it’s formed its own nation in the Pacific Ocean, known as trash island. A large and ugly place, the island is said to be two times the size of Texas- and doubling each decade. As the island is proof of, litter bugs exist all around the world. But do we really take in the consequences? In this article, we’re going to talk about the consequences litter has on our health, the environment and city aesthetic. If you need some optimism when you’re finished, check out these anti-litter campaigns around the world!

Litter in Toronto

Apparently, the average Canadian litterbug only will only walk 12 measly steps in search of a garbage can before giving up. Though littering is classified as crime in the city, it’s one of the hardest things to catch- meaning there is no immediate consequence for the litterbug. With that said, did you know that all the litter is costing the city about $25 million a year in clean up costs?

Does Toronto Have a Litter Problem? Park
Does Toronto Have a Litter Problem? Park

The City of Toronto’s 2015 litter audit found that cigarette butts and gum were the most littered items. Though the facts are getting dated, all you have to do is look around the street to see at least 10+ cigarette butts and gum on the sidewalk, as well as wrappers, Tim’s cups and papers galore. Thankfully, Mayor John Tory is aware of the litter problem and has “We (the City) should be collecting things more often and I’ll try to see to that”. If the Toronto Star is correct, Tory placed emphasis on litter pick up in late 2017. However, the onus isn’t only on the city. It’s on all of us to keep Toronto clean, and here’s why.

Aesthetic

For those of us living in the City, the most immediate and obvious consequence of litter is how it affects the aesthetic of Toronto. And it’s not just outside. For instance, I was on the TTC the other day and saw a man drop his Tim Horton’s cup on the subway floor. And it wasn’t even empty! He just stood there, eyes forward as the remnant coffee made a slick line down the subway car, the cup rolling idly as the train clattered on.

Does Toronto Have a Litter Problem? Litter In Water

As gross as that was, the negative effects of litter are more pronounced when litterbugs throw it outside. The more litter becomes common to an area, park, sidewalk or neighbourhood the more it sends the message that littering is ok. That means, when litterbugs see an unclean place, they are more confidence that littering is acceptable – and they’ll do it all the more often. It’s easy to see how the cycle is started.

Human Health

Once litter has become a problem in an area, it can start to affect human health. How, you ask? Well, all of those food packages and other debris that involve potential rotting create a perfect, fertile breeding ground for bacteria to grow (a germaphobe’s nightmare). That means, anyone who comes into contact with litter for any reason is facing a health hazard. Not to mention the more dangerous litter items like broken glass and metal can pose an immediate threat to children and adults who step, fall or bike over it. This problem becomes even more acute in the winter. When the snow covers up all the dangerous debris left behind by inconsiderate citizens. Putting you and your children directly in harm’s way.

The Environment

Unfortunately, the environment is not high on anyone’s list of cleaning priorities. However, the most damaging consequences of litter are for land-dwelling and water-dwelling creatures. When animals ingest inedible materials like plastic packaging and cigarette butts, they can become poisoned.  Furthermore, the ingestion of these materials can block animals’ intestinal tracks, stopping any real nutrients from going down. This, in turn causes the animals to starve. Perhaps even more sad is when animals become trapped or entangled in human debris like rings of six-packs and plastic packaging. If the animal cannot free itself, it’s game over.

Here’s What Your Microwave Can Clean:

Micro Can Clean Itself

No, there’s no hidden self-cleaning setting like there is on your oven and some dishwashers. And no, your microwave won’t sprout little arms and start cleaning itself. However, there’s a quick trick that will make cleaning your microwave a whole lot easier. It’s going to seem strange, but bare with us. All you’ll need is a handful of soaking wet paper towels.  Now, grit your teeth and place the towels in your microwave, and turn it on high for 1 minute. As the microwaves heat up the wet towels, they’ll start to let off steam that will soften up any and all grime that’s built up. When the microwave beeps, wait 5 minutes for the paper towels to cool down and use them to wipe off all the gunk that’s loosened up!

If you didn’t already know, microwaves are great at killing germs. And when it comes to socks, not only will your microwave disinfect and clean, it will also deodorize them! So, if the day comes when your washing machine has broken down and your left with no one and nothing to lose, it’s time to use this micro-trick. To get started, all you need is a bowl of soapy water, and the socks in question. Once you have the essentials, dunk the socks in the soapy water, and microwave on high for 10 minutes. Then, just hang them up to dry and voila!

Micro Can Clean a Cutting Board

If you prepare meat and fish, you know that disinfecting is an important part of the clean up process. For a quick, easy and chemical-free way to disinfect a plastic cutting board, follow these three steps. First, wash the cutting board in your kitchen sink. Second, dry it and rub the affected side with a lemon. Third, place the cutting board in the microwave and let it run on high for 1 minute. This process will kill the bacteria, and make your cutting board fresh and clean quicker than you can say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Remember: unlike the photo, this technique will only work for plastic cutting boards.

Micro Can Clean Candle Wax

Have you ever tried to clean up candle wax, only to give up in frustration? What about when you’re trying to clean out the beautiful jar the candle came in? Well, it’s time to stop your chipping and listen up! This method will melt your mind. First things first, make sure the jar in question is microwave safe. If it is, you can start by removing the largest pieces of wax from the jar in question using a knife or a spoon. Really, use whatever tool you prefer that allows you to get at the larger chunks. Once you’ve prepped your jar, put it in the microwave on high for 20 seconds. When you pull it out, the wax will be in the perfect, melted condition to be wiped out with a paper towel. Fin!

The 5 Times Vinegar is Essential | Downtown Toronto Maid Service

The 5 Times Vinegar is Essential | Downtown Toronto Maid Service

Every cook knows that vinegar is a blessing when it comes to flavoring food, but do you know the 5 times vinegar is essential when it comes to cleaning? Unfortunately, many people are put off by the vinegar smell. However, you may be able to get over the odor once you realize how essential this fermented gold is when it comes to cleaning and cost-efficiency. That’s right, so many household cleaners can be replaced by this cheap, non-toxic liquid! Plus, you probably have at least one kind of vinegar in your kitchen cabinets already. And so, if you’re looking to spend less on cleaning supplies, dipping into your stash of vinegar is the solution you’ve been waiting for!

Why Vinegar?

What makes vinegar such a great cleaning agent? Glad you asked. When it comes to vinegar, it’s the acetic acid that you’ll be relying on. Though acetic acid isn’t the only compound in vinegar, it’s the property that acts as a disinfectant and deodorizer. In fact, the high acidity levels in vinegar are perfect for counteracting buildups of grease, dirt, soap scum, hard water brine and residual glue from stickers. Plus, not only will vinegar act as a master cleaner, it has the ability to disinfect your items and save you from contracting salmonella, E. coli and other bacteria!

The 5 Essentials

It’s hard to come up with a list of what you can use vinegar to clean, because the list would be endless! However, we are going to discuss how you can use vinegar to your cleaning advantage when it comes to rust, grease, the dishwasher, rags and glass!

Rust

When it comes to cooking, you may favor using cast iron pots and pans. However, you’ll quickly realize how rust starts setting in after repeated use. For smooth-sailing during cooking times, prevent the rust before it gets there! To do so, simply soak your cast iron items in a solution of half white distilled vinegar, and half water. Just be careful that they don’t soak for too long! Aim for 10 minutes. As we mentioned, the acid in the vinegar is very strong, and leaving items soaking for too long can damage your cook wear. When it comes to rusted utensils, soak them in a more concentrated vinegar solution and then brush them off. You’ll have sparkly clean, rust-free items in no time!

Grease

Have you ever had to preheat your oven, just to open it and get a face full of smoke? Look into your oven you’ll find that cause of your trouble is most likely grease. But don’t worry, vinegar will come to your rescue! Instead of putting the oven on a self-cleaning cycle, simply soak a sponge in pure, distilled white vinegar and wipe the area clean. Then, watch to see how easily the grease and grime comes off. At the end of the day, vinegar allows for a maximum grease cleaning, using minimal elbow grease! For a more thorough clean, check out this baking soda and vinegar method.

Dishwasher

A common myth about dishwashers is that they don’t need to be cleaned. However, just like you need to clean the shower that cleans you, you need to clean the appliance that cleans your dishes! When you don’t clean your dishwasher for a while, you’ll find that a build-up of mineral deposits have started to accumulate. Can you guess what you’ll be using to clean it up? Yep, vinegar! The process is easy. First, pour half a cup of distilled white vinegar into the soap compartment of your dishwasher. Then, make sure your dishwasher is empty and run a normal wash cycle. When you open the door an hour or two later, the inside of your appliance will be squeaky clean!

Rags & Sponges

You may not love putting dirty rags in the wash with your clothes. And if you don’t have an excess of rags to clean, you may want to go green and refrain from a whole laundry cycle. If you’re looking for a greener way to clean your rags and sponges from dirt and stains, introduce them to vinegar! To clean rags and sponges with vinegar, place them in a container filled with just enough water so that they are covered. Then, add a quarter cup of distilled white vinegar and let rags sit in the solution overnight. When morning comes, simply rinse the rags with water and hang them up to dry. And that’s that!

Glass

If you’ve ever cleaned glass, you know that getting the job done effectively can prove to be a challenge. For example, washing your glass-wear in the dishwasher can leave mineral scratches and watermarks. So next time you have a dinner party, consider using vinegar to clean your glasses! Start by hand-washing your delicates glasses, and then spray them with distilled white vinegar. Next, simply rinse off the vinegar in hot water and let your items dry!

3 Clever Ways to Clean Your Aquaphobic Kitty | Cleaning Service Toronto

3 Clever Ways to Clean Your Aquaphobic Kitty | Cleaning Service Toronto

If you’re a proud cat-owner, it’s time for you to learn the 3 clever ways to clean your aquaphobic kitty. Even when they’ve managed to get into the dirtiest of situations, cats are aquaphobes. It’s true that cats clean themselves on the regular, licking themselves here, there and everywhere. However, they also tend to get into precarious situations that require just a little extra cleaning by you, their caring cat parent. If you have a curious cat that is basically allergic to water, there’s a few ways you can clean them- without subjecting them to the horrors of the tap.

Is Cleaning Your Cat Really Necessary?

If you’re a cat parent, you may already know how often your cat licks itself. However, unlike dogs, the act of licking isn’t just for the pleasure of it, it’s their built in cleaning system. Their tongue was built for just for them, rough like sandpaper to allow for maximum dirt removal. Not only do their tongues get the cleaning job done, the act of licking spreads their skin oils throughout their coat, keeping their fur healthy and moist.

However, there are some messes that their tongues are not equip to deal with. Plus, if your cat is elderly or overweight they may have trouble cleaning areas they had no trouble reaching when they were younger. Though your kitty’s regular lickings will save them from the dreaded bath, there are times aside from changing the kitty litter when you’ll have to take charge. But that doesn’t necessarily mean turning on the tap and making their nightmares come true! Luckily for you, there are a few ways to get your kitty as clean as a whistle, without ever bringing them near the bath tub.

Dry Shampoo Your Kitty

If you’ve ever used dry shampoo, you know that it’s a great alternative to washing your hair when you don’t have the time or will to hop in the shower. However, you may not know that dry shampoo is also useful for your aquaphobic cat! Don’t let the foamy texture of the shampoo fool you. Because once you’ve sprayed some on your cat and comb or massage it into their fur, the foam will seep in and work its magic. The dry shampoo method is especially great for fidgety cats, as they may not even be able to tell they’re being cleaned!

Wipe Your Kitty

Alternatively, you can use cat wipes to clean your little feline friend! The wipes will allow you to achieve the same effect as a bath, except your cat won’t be scarred for the rest of it’s 9 lives. More importantly, your cat will be able to tolerate the wipes because it will feel like a nice massage! And who doesn’t like a nice massage now and then?

3 Clever Ways To Clean Your Aquaphobic Kitty Relaxing
3 Clever Ways To Clean Your Aquaphobic Kitty Relaxing

If you don’t want to go and buy cat wipes, baby wipes will do the trick. Just like licking, the wipes will spread the skin oils, keeping your kitty’s coat healthy and fresh. However, note you should use this method sparingly. Just like over washing your hands, over wiping your cat can actually dilute their natural oils and make their coat dry. To keep your cat healthy, you should only use the wipes once a week, or even every two weeks.

Brush Your Kitty

Similar to the reasons you brush your own hair, the simplest thing you can do to keep your kitty clean is regular brushing. By giving your cat a helping hand and brushing it regularly, you’ll lessen the time it spends licking which. This in turn will prevent them from swallowing all the hair and dirt that constitutes those hair balls. So, find a brush that your cat doesn’t mind and spend some time brushing! Just make sure the brushing goes down somewhere that’s easy to sweep, as pet dander is a leading dust culprit!

4 Ways Your Server Can Help Remove a Stain Immediately | Maid4Condos

4 Ways Your Server Can Help Remove a Stain Immediately | Maid4Condos

When the worst possible scenario happens at a restaurant you need to be mentally prepared and know the 4 ways your server can help remove a stain immediately. Don’t worry, it’s happened to all of us. You sit down to enjoy a nice meal at your favorite restaurant (i.e. every restaurant) and WHAM! You look down at your shirt, your pants- your life. Low and behold, there’s a colourful mark that was not there before. You’ve been stained.

Somehow, that little stain has the power to ruin your mindset for the rest of the evening. Maybe you’re wearing new clothes, maybe you’re meeting a new person. Either way, you feel embarrassed. So what is an innocent person to do when they’re uselessly far from home? Well listen up! By simply asking your server for a few common ingredients, that stain will be cleaner in no time.  Feel weird about wanting to be so clean? Don’t! There’s actually some great moral side-effects…

Beating the Stain Game

Ultimately, time is the most important factor when it come to getting a stain out. The quicker you treat the stain the more likely you are to get rid of it, as dry stains are much harder to clean than fresh ones. With this in mind, you need to keep that baby moist by blotting it with a damp napkin. You can do this with the water on your table, if you haven’t drunk it already! Use as much water as you can without soaking your clothes.

If you find that you accumulate stains endlessly, consider keeping a Tide To-Go pen in your purse or pocket. After all, it is designed specifically to clean stains quickly. But don’t different stains require different cleaning methods? Glad you asked! Yes, yes they do. As the inside person with access to the kitchen, your server will be able to fetch all the ingredients you need.  If you plan to use the tap in the restroom during the cleaning process, brush up on the 5 tips you need to know about public restrooms. You’ll thank us later, we promise.

Don’t Whine over Red Wine

Whether you indulge in Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec there’s an effective stain solution you can implement right from your table! First things first, order some club soda. While you wait for the fizzy drank to arrive and soak up all the spilled wine you can with your napkin. Assuming your server is attentive, your club soda will be ready once you’re finished.

Next, blot the club soda on the stain and then apply a generous layer of salt to the area and let it sit for as long as possible. Once you can’t stand sitting in the salty mess any longer, brush it off! The area may not be perfectly clean, but a cycle in the wash will finish the job. And by wash we mean washing machine- for god sakes don’t put your clothes in the dishwasher!

Grease Lightning

Unfortunately, finding grease on your pants isn’t as much fun as finding Grease on Netflix. Just like red wine, the first step to clean is wiping away as much excess grease as possible with your napkin, so that you’re just left with a moist mark. Next, ask your server to bring over some artificial sweetener. Yep, you heard that right. Tap some of the fine powder out onto the affected area. (Though the powder won’t be as fine as Olivia Newton John, it’s perfect for soaking up the oiliness). Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work right away. It may take a few packets of sweetener and many a blotting for this method to work!

Ketchup Catastrophe

Everyone knows that the coolest people love ketchup, which means the coolest people are also the most vulnerable to ketchup stains.  When this happens to you, run the stain under cold water and then ask your server for some white vinegar. The vinegar, which is made of water and acetic acid will do just the trick by dissolving the ketchup residue without damaging the fabric of your clothes. Use the trusty vinegar to blot at the stain, removing as much as you can. Before you throw it in the wash, dilute some laundry detergent and apply it on the affected area. Then throw it in the wash to get clean and forget about it until next time! You ketchup fiend, you.

Coffee & Tea Referee

Ah, coffee and tea- the part of the meal you’ve been waiting for. This after meal ritual is a nice way to wind down and get your final conversations out. You’ve made it through the entire dinner stain free, yet somehow… you’ve managed to muck up your clothing right before you’re in the clear. Don’t panic! Just ask your server for some white vinegar, as you would for a ketchup stain. Once you get your hands on that liquid gold, swirl a little in with some water. Dip your napkin into the solution and dab repeatedly until you can’t dab anymore. Once you get home, apply some detergent and then throw it in the washing machine for maximum clean!
