Clean T.O: It’s Not Clutter, it’s #Maximalism

It’s Not Clutter, it’s #Maximalism

Your minimalist friends might have a heart attack when they walk into your apartment- but there’s good news, it’s not clutter, it’s #maximalism! That’s right, if you find pleasure in bold colours, clashing patterns and textures, and lots-o-stuff, you might be a maximalist! Read on as we explain what #maximalism is, why it’s been trending so hard, and the steps you need to take to curate your clutter into a clean maximalist space!

Clean T.O: It’s Not Clutter, it’s Maximalism Living Room
Clean T.O: It’s Not Clutter, it’s Maximalism Living Room

We all know what minimalism is, right? From magazines to movies to iPhones, the minimalist design surrounds us everyday. With that said, it’s no shock that minimalism, with all of its sharp lines and muted colours, has taken over western décor. Ironically, it’s popularity may be the reason it’s on the way out! Turns out, there really can be too much of a good thing. However, it’s natural for trends to be replaced by its opposite. So, say bye-bye to minimalism and hello #maximalism!

Define it, Please (Maximalism)

In terms of aesthetic, maximalism can be defined complete opposite of minimalism. For example, the “more is more” style employs designs that are visually stimulating and emotionally evocative. Whereas minimalism is all about “more is less”. However, #maximalism isn’t 100% different from it’s minimalist sibling. In fact, the awesomeness of maximalism lies in its contradiction.  For instance, on one hand maximalist living involves a lot of ‘stuff’- collections, art work, furniture, objects, etc. And according to maximalist theory, these beloved objects will make your home more inspiring if they are chosen based on functionality and beauty.

Clean T.O: It’s Not Clutter, it’s Maximalism Blue Room
Clean T.O: It’s Not Clutter, it’s Maximalism Blue Room

On the other hand, maximalism is not an excuse to keep your home in disarray. In fact, an equally essential component of #maximalism is how you organize and present your belongings within your home. At the end of the day, when done correctly a maximalist space can actually be calming. Lastly, it’s important to note that a maximalist home will be ever-changing and evolving. For example, a maximalist would have a wonderful time decorating their condo for fall!

But is it Clean?

It’s easy to assume that calling a home ‘maximalist’ is simply an excuse for clutter and kitschy excess. However, there is a difference between being a maximalist and a slob. On that note, if maximalist decor is not curated with thoughtful precision, you could end up making a big mess! With that said, though home-cleaning in a maximalist space may not necessarily be easier, you probably won’t have to clean as often. For instance, just think about how easy it is to muck up a white shoe vs. a pair with a busy design! Exactly.

Clean T.O: It’s Not Clutter, it’s Maximalism Messy Room
Clean T.O: It’s Not Clutter, it’s Maximalism Messy Room

However, don’t be fooled – keeping a maximalist home tidy is extremely important. For example, think about all the stuff sitting around collecting dust! At the end of the day, you don’t need a deep clean every month- but you do need to be dusting regularly. In addition, you could add some indoor air-purifying plants to your home to ensure you’re breathing in quality air. But be careful, practising regular home-cleaning can have some serious moral side-effects! However, there are still times when a hiring a home-cleaning service is essential. Check out Maid4Condosservices to see if anything catches your eye!

Are You a Maximalist?

For most people, maintaining a minimalist lifestyle doesn’t feel natural. Not mention the constant home-cleaning, which only becomes amplified when you have pets or children. However, if you’re still not sure where you stand on the mini-maxi spectrum, check out this article to see if you are truly a maximalist.

However, if you find that you’re neither a hard-core minimalist or maximalist- you’re probably somewhere in-between! And that’s just fine. In fact, it’s healthy. Ultimately, when minimalist values are blended with a maximalist style, you can have the best of both worlds! Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it too? Living between two extremes will not only help you relax, but will make you more comfortable in your home. Plus, you’ll feel more inspired. Because, aren’t you tired of coming home to a boring, empty, minimalist apartment?

Before You Go…

However, we need to give you a heads up. As previously mentioned, the maximalist lifestyle is trending. So much so, that some are connecting it to the lifestyle of Donald Trump, a famous maximalist. However, maximalism is not just about showing off one’s wealth. In fact, for us ‘normies’, it’s a way to express our artistic taste, and be surrounded by things that inspire us.

Litter can really get to be an issue when you’re living in a small space. For instance, if you don’t have the right size litter box, the right kind of litter or a litter mat, you could be in for a rude awakening when you get home. But don’t worry, there are a few things you can do to make your small space work for the both of you, and nip that litter problem in the bud! In fact, having a small space isn’t necessary a bad thing, as it actually forces you to clean more- keeping you can your cat healthier!

The Litter Box

The most important to realize is that each cat needs its own litter box. Ideally, each cat should have two litter boxes but if you’re in a small space, you can get away with just one. However, if you can find the space, and alternative litter box is great to have in case your feline friend finds a problem with the first one- because, cats.

Next, you should know that the size of your litter box will greatly affect your future litter troubles. For instance, if your litter box is too large, there’s a chance your cat may accidentally do its business outside the box. Indeed a nightmare for home cleaning. With that said, high-sided litter boxes are great at reducing the scatter of litter! Check out popular products like the NVR Miss, or opt for a DIY litter-box option! For a quick litter-box hack, simply convert a deep, high-sided storage box into a bathroom and pour litter directly into the box! However, it’s important to note that high-sided litter boxes won’t be great for older cats that have lost their jump and flexibility. Already have a litter box? Check out this article to find out what your litter box says about you!

The Litter

When it comes to litter in a small space, odor and tracking are some of cat-owner’s biggest concerns. However, with the right measures and practices in place there are ways to tackle both of these problems! At the end of the day, you just want to keep your small space clean, your cat satisfied and your neighbors happy. Gosh, there’s just so many benefits to being clean…

Tracking

When it comes to choosing a cat litter, you have to realize that some have higher tracking potential than others. However, it’s quite possible that your cat may love the messiest one! So, before you settle, try a few different brands to find a litter that will suit both you and your cat. Check out this guide of the best non-tracking litters of 2017! Trust, you’ll thank yourself next time you’re doing some home cleaning.

As you grow old with your cat, it’s good practice to sweep up any tracked litter as soon as you spot it. For fear that, the longer the litter sits out, the more chance the mess has of spreading. And trust us, nothing is more horrible for your cat, your health or your nostrils than a dirty litter box and trackings. If you still need encouragement to clean, keep a broom or small vacuum near the litter box. However, if you are looking for something to really stop the tracking, you should consider a litter mat, specifically designed to catch the litter stuck in the paws of your cat. In fact, there’s a whole range of litter mats made from all kinds of material. Alternatively, you could go DIY and create a litter mat from an old throw rug or piece of carpet!

Odor

It’s not secret that litter boxes stink, it is a bathroom after all. However, when you’re living in a small space and sharing the building with others- you have to think about litter odor. Not only is a foul odor in a small space bad for your mental health, it won’t be appreciated by your neighbors! Remember, the hallway of your building is basically an extension of your apartment or condo when it comes to smell. With that said, whether you have found a litter or are just experimenting, it’s a good idea to mix a little baking soda in to defend against the inevitable odor.

Clean T.O Got Kitty Litter Problems Picture of Cat Nose

However, the most essential practice in defending against the odor and potential health hazards of litter is simple: scoop the litter box once in the morning and once at night. If you find that you don’t have the time to stay home and scoop, there are plenty of self-scooping litter boxes that work automatically! So what do you have to do? Just  empty the box at night. That’s it. Because at the end of the day, your top priority should be that your cat isn’t living in filth.

Home Cleaning

Ultimately, the biggest way to keep your small space odor free is to clean it on a regular basis. Yes, a sweet relationship with your feline will involve vacuuming, mopping, washing and dusting. When it comes to home cleaning, hardwood, laminate and tile floors will make your life easy. However, if you are dealing with carpet, you need to take a few extra steps for the benefits of being clean. For example, sprinkling some baking soda on your carpets a few hours before you vacuum will help to absorb any odors that have been trapped in the fibers! By doing this, you will ultimately make your cleaning job easier and more successful.

Once you have finished your home cleaning regimen, open the windows! It sounds too easy, but by simply opening your windows for just ten minutes, even in winter, the air quality in your small space will be much improved! At the end of the day, you’ll always enjoy the benefits of being clean. If you find that you don’t have the time to give you home the regular cleaning it needs, consider a home cleaning service. Check out our cleaning packages to see how we can make your small space thrive!

Clean T.O: The Moral Side-Effects of Being Clean

Clean T.O: The Moral Side Effects of Being Clean

Do you know what healthy, successful and good people all have in common? Apparently, being clean actually has moral side-effects! According to researchers, people with the cleanest homes are the healthier, more successful and just kinder human beings in general! Crazy, right? Maybe not. In fact, there are a few reasons why a clean house will help make you a better person overall. Don’t worry, we’ll explain this phenomenon and how you can start living it.

The Smell of Morality

The connection between cleanliness and morality was popularized by the 2009 study from Brigham Young University that put some participants in a room that was freshly cleaned, and some in a room that could ‘use a wipe down’. Interestingly enough, researchers found that participants in the freshly cleaned room were more likely to volunteer their time and donate to charity. This compared to those in the ‘average’ room! Given the evidence, it was concluded that moral benefits of cleaning are tied to the smell and how we associate with it, cool!

In others words, the positive association with the smell of ‘clean’ triggers moral awareness! Fortunately, our culture has a positive association with the smell of cleaning. Furthermore, this symbiosis creates constant opportunity for you to take advantage of the benefits of being clean and organized. However, there may be an evolutionary reason why we prefer to live and work in clean spaces…

What’s the Deal?

Though it’s rarely spoken about, indoor air is actually more polluted than the air outdoors! Apparently, even spending just 90 minutes indoors gives your lungs the opportunity to breathe in dust mites, pet shedding, mold, bug skeletons, and pollen! This is bad news for the people of Toronto, whose winters are spent scurrying from building to building. Moreover, we can even breathe in toxins from intimate everyday items, like clothing and bed sheets. Wondering why you haven’t gotten sick? Unfortunately, you have. You just thought it was allergies.

Similarly, a study carried out by Havas worldwide found that the more consumeristic items we accumulate, the more depressed, anxious and joyless we feel. Therefore, it makes sense that clutter and materialism have high potential to lead to stress and anxiety. However, there is good news! Additionally, the study also that negative emotions like stress, anxiety and depression can be relieved through vigorous housework! No, we’re not trying to trick you! There’s lots of people that can back us up. For instance, check out this article to find out which five household chores reduce stress!

Your Health

So, keeping your home clean has mental health benefits, but did you know that living in cleanliness can actually improve the choices you make regarding your health? According to a study from Indiana University, participants who had clean homes were found to be the healthiest and most active. However, this connection is not new, in a quote articulated by medical pioneer Florence Nightingale, “The connection between health and the dwelling of the population is one of the most important that exists”. In other words, when you have a healthy home you are able to live a healthier life. And, what’s wrong with that? Not only will a clean home encourage a healthier lifestyle, the rhythmic and repetitive nature of cleaning tasks are quite meditative. Consequently, the act of home cleaning itself can be used an outlet for negative emotions.

Moreover, a study in the Psychological Science Journal found that keeping your home clean can also lead to healthier food choices! The study found those who worked in a clean space were more likely to choose to eat fruit over chocolate. This compared to those who worked in a cluttered room. In other words, when you’re perceive clutter and mess, your mind thinks more chaotically. As a result, you tend to overeat and your body will crave comfort food, like chocolate.

But Don’t Be a Monica…

However, it’s important to remember that being a “Monica” about cleaning is never healthy. You don’t want to increase your stress levels! As a matter of fact, being unaware of a cleaning obsession could lead to the development of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

For this reason, it’s important to remember that it’s not possible for everything to be 100% clean, 100% of the time.  At the end of the day, cleaning your house regularly once or twice a week you should be reaping all the benefits of being clean. Feel like your home isn’t getting the proper care and cleaning it needs? Check Maid4Condo’s services and start reaping the health benefits of being clean and organized!

Clean T.O: 4 Reasons Your Condo Neighbours Hate You – Maid4Condos

Clean T.O: 4 Reasons Your Condo Neighbours Hate You – Maid4Condos

Do you want to find out why your condo neighbours hate you? While you’re complaining about your neighbor’s being obnoxious, you might also be the culprit of un-neighborly behavior!

Without realizing it, our lifestyles can impact those around us, especially when it comes to condo living. With that said, read on to find out if you’re guilty of living one of these 4 lifestyles that might be driving your condo neighbours up the walls.

Clean T.O 4 Reasons Your Condo Neighbours Hate You Picture Of Hat

You may have been having problems with your condo neighbour for a while, or you may be meeting a fresh face. At the end of the day, it seems that people aren’t dealing with these problems as effectively as they could be. Ultimately, good relationships rest on being able to identify the problem and the ways of resolve it. Who knows, with an open mind, you may end up making a new friend or two along the way!

Because, You Have a Pupper.

It’s hard to believe, but some people don’t love dogs. I know- it’s shocking. However, too many dog owners face the wrath of icy condo neighbours. Okay, so these icy neighbours aren’t all horrible people- they could be allergic or suffer from Cynophobia (fear of dogs). If you are one of these people, check out this article to learn more about how to effectively talk to your neighbour about their dog. Don’t worry, all hope is not lost! There are solutions that will allow the three of you to peacefully co-exist.

For instance, if your neighbour is allergic, make sure your pup doesn’t linger in the hallway or common spaces for too long. And, if you know your neighbour leaves their place the same time you’re go for a walk- wait a minute or take the stairs! However, if you just moved in, barking may be the issue. In that case, you may just need to talk it out. Calmly, explain to your neighbour that your dog is adjusting to the new space. However, if the barking keeps up- you may have to look into more professional solutions. For more information about dogs in condos, check out our other article about the 4 essential tips dog owners in condos should know!

Because, You’re an Introvert

Being an introvert can be great. In fact, most people are a combination of introvert and extrovert– a condition called being an Ambivert. However, if introvert tendencies leak into your neighbourly behaviour, there’s a problem. You may think that leaving a note on the door, under the door, or in their mailbox will solve your neighbourly problems.  However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth! In fact, some people see these communications as passive which will frustrate them more. So, for the most effective result, push past the awkwardness and talk to your neighbour face to face about what’s been bothering you.

On the other hand, you may be the extroverted neighbour dealing with an introvert. As you know, introverts don’t mean any harm, they just have a different way of doing things! So, if you find that you see more notes than you do your actual neighbour, don’t get frustrated. Instead, learn to keep your cool and be pleasant when you do end up having an interaction. Maybe one day, you’ll even wind up being friends! Check out this article for more tips on how to get to know your introverted condo neighbour.

Because, You Smoke

Condo living is great, but it doesn’t have all the perks of a free standing home. Unfortunately, when it comes to smells, your hallway is actually an extension of your unit. Ultimately, if you can smell the cooking from 309, they can smell the cigarettes from you. And unlike their cooking, cigarette smoke leaves a lingering smell that could lead to toxic consequences.

Clean T.O 4 Reasons Your Condo Neighbours Hate You Picture Of Smoking

If you’ve been smoking in your condo and haven’t checked your building’s rules, you should get on that. It’s only a matter of time before someone makes a formal complaint. Not only is it bad for everyone’s health- it will decrease the value of your condo! Nothing turns buyers off more than third hand smoke. Instead, seek out designated smoking areas in your building and make it habit to smoke there.

Because, You’re Noisy

Unsurprisingly, noise disturbances make up the largest portion of complaints from condo and apartment owners alike. Where are you on this side of the argument? If you have instruments or enjoy loud music, make sure to be respectful of the time. For example, some condos allow loud noise until 11pm, while others don’t have strict enforcements. So, it would be worthwhile to look into your buildings rules. However, you don’t have to throw an EDM festival in your condo to know it’s against the rules.

On the other hand, if you sit at the other side of spectrum, you might be reeling at the casualness of that advice! Unfortunately, there is no magic cure for noise reduction. However, you can become thoroughly informed of your building’s rules so that next time you make a complaint, you have the writing to back it up!

Clean T.O: A Guide to Indoor Plants in Small Spaces

Clean T.O: A Guide to Indoor Plants in Small Spaces

Whether you grew plants on your balcony this summer or not, you should consider bringing indoor plants into your small space this winter!  Not only can indoor plants liven up the décor of your condo, they have a number of health benefits, including increasing the air quality! However, there are a few things to consider when bringing your plants indoors for the winter, or choosing indoor plants for your condo.

Moving Plants Indoors

If you already have plants growing on your balcony you might not have brought them in because of the usually gorgeous September weather. But, it’s time to start thinking about the transfer. At the end of the day, light is all plants need to photosynthesize and grow. Unfortunately, with that said, plants that have already been struggling in the fresh outdoors may not make it in a small space.

Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of balcony
Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of balcony

That means that you should only move plants that you deem strong enough to handle the transfer, and say goodbye to the rest. Because, unless you’re sentimentally attached to a weak plant, you don’t need the added stress of failing health when you’re already attempting to garden in your condo!

The Process

Don’t be fooled, the transfer will be process. Just think how different the environment on your balcony is compared to inside your condo! And so, your plant needs a careful transition to the indoors so that it adjusts to the sudden changes. At the end of the day, being mindful during each stage of the transfer is the key to maintaining your plant’s health.

Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of green leaf
Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of green leaf

Remember, that sudden change in temperature, light and humidity could traumatize your plants. Ultimately, leading to wilting, yellowing and in worst case- death. However, if you do your research on how to assimilate your specific plant types and act accordingly, everything should be fine!

The Transfer

We recommend to transfer all your plants indoors before night-time temperatures sink below 7 degrees Celsius. This is especially true for tropical plants, so think about bringing them in! However, remember to inspect all pots for bugs, spiders, earthworms, snails, moss or mold if you plant to bring them inside. Unless of course, you’re looking for new roommates!

Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of soil transfer
Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of soil transfer

However, even if you didn’t find any creepy crawlers on your pot, there’s something you need to do before you bring your baby in. As a precaution, you should let the pot sit in a tub of lukewarm water for 15 minutes, forcing any hidden critters out.  Then, scrub the exterior of the pot with a simple DIY household cleaning solution like vinegar until you’re satisfied! Next, just rinse off until clean. For guidance on the actual transferring process, check out this video that will walk you through the transfer process step by step!

Plant Placement

If your plants are moving in for the winter, have you thought about where they’ll live? Consider adding ceilings, wall hooks or shelves to small space to store your plants over the winter. Think about which areas get the most sun, and how easy it will be to water them.

Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of hanging plants
Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of hanging plants

In terms of lighting, supplementary indoor plant lights are a terrific option if you don’t get great sunlight in your condo. It’s been found that many different plants like herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers and greens can flourish under a mix of sun and artificial light, so give it a shot!

Welcome, to the Indoors!

To prevent shock when bringing plants indoors, they should be gradually exposed to the reduced lighting. In fact, as the plant adapts to the new setting, it will start to regenerate any wilting or leaves it has lost. So, you may want to consider the LED lights until they adjust.

Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of plant
Clean T.O a guide to indoor plants in small spaces picture of plant

You need to feed your plant a little differently during the transition, too! Overwatering is the silent killer of many unsuspecting houseplants, so you should let the soil surface dry before watering. When in doubt, don’t water- because your plant isn’t getting enough light to dry out properly. Last but not least, give you brave plant a boost of fertilizer, for strength! After the boost, your plant will be satisfied for the winter months to come.

Choosing an Indoor Plant

Clean T.O: 10 Essential Tips to Host Thanksgiving in Your Condo!

Clean T.O: 10 Essential Tips to Host Thanksgiving in Your Condo!

You may have hosted Thanksgiving before, but have you ever hosted in your condo? It’s true, there are some tips good for any Thanksgiving feast. However, there are some condo-specific tips that will make the whole process a whole lot easier! Needless to say, we’ve compiled 10 essential tips on how to make your condo Thanksgiving run as smoothly as possible, without having to hire a cleaning service!

The Guest List

Ultimately, the number of guests you invite into your condo will determine many other components of the night, so you want to get it out of the way- pronto. Unsurprisingly, the key is to be realistic: how many people can you fit comfortably in your condo? It’s hard to chisel down the number of guests if you’re hosting your family- but friends, you could whittle down as necessary.

The Menu

As you’ve probably anticipated, the ingredients and materials you’ll need for Thanksgiving will most likely overwhelm your small kitchen. So, the more you plan in advance, the better! First, make a list of your ingredients and where you’ll buy them. Remember, put thought into what meals and if you’ll be able to store, prep and execute them in your kitchen under a lot of stress.

Clean T.O 10 Essential Tips to Host Thanksgiving in Your Condo picture of appetizers

For example, what kind of appetizers and wine are you planning to serve? Serving store-bought appetizers like nuts, pickles and olives will satisfy your guests and make your life much easier. When it comes to wine, turkey goes great with red or white! However, red doesn’t need to be refrigerated- saving you valuable space in your fridge. It’s these small-space specific tips that you want to take advantage of!

Oven and Stove Space

If you’re planning on serving Turkey, it’s going to be hogging the stove for hours prior to the big meal. So what does that mean for you? First of all, opt for side dishes that can be made in days advance, or that only require a quick reheat before being served. Furthermore, don’t forget about those key dishes like roasted carrot & parsnip salad or a French onion tart can be served at room temperature! Check out these thanksgiving side-dish recipes from the Cooking Channel to really get those cogs turning!

Packaging & Storage Space

If you haven’t realized already, most food comes in packaging that is way bigger than the product itself. Moving store-bought items into bags or containers will save a ton of space in your fridge, counter tops and cupboards. For example, you’ll be able to fit lettuce into your vegetable drawer instead of letting it take up space on your shelf! It’s simple, just remove the plastic box and transferring it to a bag- easy!

In addition, don’t let your small kitchen stop you from discovering hidden storage spaces in your condo! For example, wine and beer bottles are bulky, taking up valuable storage space in your fridge. Instead, ditch the fridge all together and try this trick people have been using for years! It’s easy, you can create an ice bucket in your bath-tub by pouring loose ice in, and voila! Instant ice bucket.

Food Prep

It’s time to think about which dishes you can make in advance, or at the very least which ingredients can be prepped before turkey day. For instance, potatoes and carrots can be peeled ahead of time, and stored in water.

Clean T.O 10 Essential Tips to Host Thanksgiving in Your Condo picture of prepping

Furthermore, if you’re planning on stuffing a turkey, you can cube up some bread. And if you’re planning on baking, you can mix and store dry ingredients or simply bake your pie in advance! Lastly, did you know that you can toast nuts ahead of time and store them in the freezer? Trust us, whatever you decide to do- you’ll be forever grateful if you tackle as much as you can a day or two in advance!

The Turkey

To turkey, or not to turkey? A turkey takes up a lot of space, for a long period of time. Furthermore, a frozen turkey can take three days to defrost in a fridge and will require you to clean a spot for it! However, if you have a patio or fire escape, you could also defrost your turkey in a cooler- even brining it simultaneously. Alternatively, you could just ditch the turkey! As we said, they take up a lot of space in the fridge and the oven.

So, if shying away from the turkey tradition doesn’t make you feel guilty, go for it! Plus, you have options- there is no shortage of Thanksgiving alternatives, so check them out and see what makes your stomach grumble! Vegan? No problem! There’s plenty of options for our socially conscious brothers and sisters, just check out these 44 Vegan Recipes for Thanksgiving!

A Strategic Floor Plan

When you’re hosting guests in a condo, some temporary furniture adjustments can go a long way. This means, it’s time to bring out the extra folding chairs and place your furniture strategically, in a way conducive to social engagement. Perhaps that means moving a side table between two chairs or place the coffee table by the window to create a small snack station!

Additionally, if you have any stools, buckets, benches or step stools you’ll want to keep them waiting in the wings. You never know when you’ll need an extra seat in a pinch! At the end of the day, seating and socialization is one of the most important aspects of a dinner party, so spend some time coming up with a plan! Read up on how your guests may be judging you to learn about what hosting faux pas to avoid this Thanksgiving.

De-clutter

Clean T.O 10 Essential Tips to Host Thanksgiving in Your Condo picture of clutter
Clean T.O 10 Essential Tips to Host Thanksgiving in Your Condo picture of clutter

It’s always nice to have clear surfaces for your guests to put their plate or cup down, and it’s also nice to know your things are safe! De-cluttering not only makes your condo look sleeker and tidier, but offers convenience to your guests and gives you peace of mind none of your belongings will be knocked over or damaged while you’re busy hosting.

Seating & Serving Style

There are a few ways to go about the seating plan and deciding how you will serve the food you have so tirelessly prepared. However, the internet has deemed that regardless of whether your guests are seated around the table, or around your condo- buffet style works best. Just think about it: you’re all sitting at the table, with your drinks and plates and the turkey, there is little space left for the side dishes to fit comfortably.

Clean T.O 10 Essential-Tips to Host Thanksgiving in Your Condo picture of buffet style
Clean T.O 10 Essential-Tips to Host Thanksgiving in Your Condo picture of buffet style

So, consider leaving the majority of dishes in your kitchen, on the counters and even on the stove top for guests to serve themselves, leaving the table open and spacious. However, traditional table seating is  not the only way to go. For example, for  larger or less traditional crowds, informal seating in the living area (or elsewhere) can work really well! In this case, the buffet could be spread on the table, with chairs and side tables placed conveniently around the condo for dining.

Clean as You Go

Last but not least, clean as you go! Ultimately, the key to keeping your head on Thanksgiving will be cleaning your condo as you move through the night. For example, if you let dishes pile up after prep, the first course, second, third- you’ll be swimming in dishes by dessert! Not to mention, by the end of the night. However, the ‘clean-as-you-go’ method is not for everyone, and that’s okay…

Clean T.O 10 Essential Tips to Host Thanksgiving in Your Condo picture of dishes

Luckily for you, there’s another condo Thanksgiving hack that will keep your kitchen spacious without having to clean all night. Just stash ‘em in the bath tub! This of course, only works if you’re not already using your tub as an ice-bucket. However, by placing dirty dishes in your bathtub and closing your shower curtain, you’ll be able to enjoy the night and no one will be the wiser. Don’t worry, you can get to the dishes in the morning, unless someone needs to take a shower! But seriously, don’t be shy enlisting a few friends or relatives to help you clean. Plus, check out this article to find out ways to prevent mess throughout the night!

Ok, we said you could do it without a cleaning service. But what if you had a lot of people over? If the mess is just too overwhelming, there’s nothing wrong with hiring a cleaning service. Just imagine, you’ll get to come home to your condo looking better than ever without having to lift a finger! If you’re feeling stressed out after an event, Maid4Condos is only a few clicks away! Clean T.O: 4 Valuable Tips to Sell Your Condo

Clean T.O: 4 Valuable Tips to Sell Your Condo

There are many reasons why you’re over your condo in Toronto, but there’s four valuable tips about selling you may not know! Perhaps, you bought a unit when you were young and have simply outgrown of it. Maybe you’re moving onward and upward. Whatever the reason, you have chosen to sell. Consider these four ways to get the most market value out of your condo in Toronto!

1.    Hire a Real Estate Professional

If it’s your first time dealing with condo real estate and lack experienced relatives and friends- it’s time to hire a real estate professional. The fact is, real estate professionals can give you peace of mind. For instance, ensuring your condo agreement complies with local laws and giving you the low-down on all the important details.

If you’re not sure whether to hire a real estate lawyer, or a real estate agent check out this article from the Toronto Star. In addition to advising, real estate agents can help you advertise, price, show, negotiate your condo and handle the paperwork. Plus, their fees only amount to about one month’s rent. At the end of the day, you have a higher chance of closing your sale at or above market value if you hire a real estate professional.

2.    Listing Your Condo

If you don’t want to hire a real estate agent or just want to be proactive, your next step is to list your condo! It’s true that digital advertising is most common, however if you find yourself in a situation where a strategically placed flyer would work, go for it! For instance, if you’re trying to advertise to a niche group like young families, young couples or professionals- advertising through local newspapers or strategically-placed flyers could yield results!

However, many have successful dealings through Kijiji and Craigslist, as well as reputable real estate sites like MLS listings. However, it’s important to remember caution when selling online. For instance, you should be extremely careful when talking to ‘overseas’ tenants offering to take your condo without seeing it, as individuals who operate like this are known to scam.

Value

To gain full market-value of your condo, you have to really think about what it has to offer. Have you determined how much your condo is currently worth, given its size and location? How costly is it relative to other, similar condos in the area? Does it offer anything special? Remember that amenities, services, location, neighbourhood and transportation will all affect the value of your condo. Timing

If you haven’t heard, timing is everything. And Apparently Canadians prefer moving home in the summer, fall and spring! That one’s not so hard to figure out, who wants to move in the winter? However, this is not to say that sales don’t happen all year! They just might take a little longer. Ultimately, you want to keep seasons, economy, location, interest rates, and government policies in mind when you’re thinking of putting your condo on the market. Check out this article to learn more about the best times to sell in Toronto!

Photographs

Finally, it’s time to create the listing and you have to start thinking about those essentials, like photographs. Having good quality images of your condo will be your key to reeling in potential buyers. Make sure you take good quality, true-to-life images that capture the essence of your condo’s interior and the surrounding amenities. The more pictures the better. However, do not take any photographs before you stage! Even if the picture is professional, an un-staged home will not sell as quickly, or for as much. For tips on how to create the perfect aesthetic read on! For more information about the images, check out this article to avoid making common real-estate photography mistakes!

3.    Staging

If you like decorating, you’ll enjoy staging! While some have a soft spot for fixer uppers, the majority of buyers want to be able to slide into your home as is. Just think about model homes you’ve seen, with their neutral style and colouring. Applying a neutral style to your condo will allow prospective buyers to project their visions and dreams onto the space, and drive your value up!

In addition, a little home cleaning and repair could go a long way. Before you take photos for the listing- or dare show the condo- make sure to clear away your clutter, and add homey touches like flowers or coffee table books to common spaces. To really make an impression, you could even leave out a pot of tea or plate of cookies! In the end, the more comfortable the buyers feel the higher your chances. After all, you’re selling them a lifestyle. Check out this article for some key condo staging tips!

4.    Showings

All of the previous steps have led to this moment. The lawyer, the agent, the listing, the staging- it all comes down to the showing. This is your chance to make your buyer fall in love. Unless you’ve outsourced, it’s your job to give prospective buyers the ‘grand tour’. Remember, don’t be shy to rave about your condo and all the features you love!

Don’t hold back from sharing small conveniences, like how accessible the subway is or how late the store closes downstairs. Likewise, don’t be afraid to tell them about how your nieces and nephews love to swim in the condo’s pool. Ultimately, it’s those little real-life anecdotes that will help paint a picture and seal the deal. To learn more, check out this article with some great tips on how to show your home!

Tenant Trouble

There is no reason your showing shouldn’t run smoothly- unless you currently have a tenant. In fact, it’s been reported that tenants cause 80% of showings to fall through! In fact, they can make the whole process difficult, holding you up at every stage; from cleaning to listing. For example, your tenant could be aggressive and refuse to leave the condo during showing times, and make your buyers uncomfortable. If you’re worried on losing one month’s rent, think about all the money you’ll lose in market value. Not convinced? Check out this article to hear about a tenant horror story and why you should always terminate a lease before selling.

Finally, Getting Your Value

At the end of the day, you’re dealing with an asset of major value. And the truth is, you’re only going to get your money’s worth- or more- by maximizing its full potential. For some, that could mean a basic clean, deep clean or move in/move out clean. For others, it could mean replacements or repairs to painting, floors and fixtures.

Clean T.O: 5 Public Restrooms Tips You Need to Know

The Shock-clean Truth About Public Toilets

We hate to break the news, but you’ve been using public restrooms all wrong. For instance, you know that trick where you use toilet paper to shield yourself against the ominous toilet seat? Yea, that doesn’t work. In fact, it does the exact opposite! Confused? Don’t worry, we’ll let you in on all the dirty details. Just thank us next time you’re in a public restroom!

Is Anything Clean?

Fortunately, there are some aspects of public restrooms that are relatively clean! They’re just not what you think. Like, did you know that the toilet seat is actually the cleanest place in a public restroom? When you think about it, it makes sense. People and maintenance workers alike are wiping and disinfecting those seats all day long! However, even if the seat didn’t get wiped all day, it would still be the least hazardous bathroom component.

Professionals go so far to say that unless you go so far as licking the toilet seat – there’s very low potential for transmitting an infection. They say, it’s because the bacteria that does get onto the seat actually dies off quickly. In fact, your body produces the same bacteria found on seats  – meaning it can’t hurt you in small doses.

Shockingly, some researchers go as far to say that the top of the toilet seat is cleaner than a kitchen sink! They say this could be due to the actual materials used to make the seats- their smooth, curved nature isn’t the most hospitable environment for bacteria.

By now, we’ve learned that toilet seats themselves are clean…so what happens when we cover them with toilet paper? In a shocking twist of fate, that innocent act of insurance you take could actually be putting your health in greater jeopardy.

1. The Horrors of Toilet Paper

So what is dirty? Though this news will shock you to your core- we have to tell you. Toilet paper is said to be one of the dirtiest in public restrooms. Yes, we use it to blow our nose and wipe our faces – yet toilet paper is actually the dirtiest thing in the restroom. Why? Because it’s the perfect environment for bacteria to collect in! Yep, the germs get right up into the paper and we put it right to our face and bodies. You might want to think twice before blowing your nose!

2. The Horrors of the Floor

Did you know that the second dirtiest place in a restroom is the floor? Even though it’s not so shocking, it remains just as true. The floors of public restrooms are cesspools of germs.

So what does that mean for you? Firstly, never leave anything there. Next time you make a trip, make sure your bag, purse or briefcase doesn’t touch the floor. Because, each time it makes contact the bacteria from the floor transfers onto it. Consequently, that bacteria will remain there until it lands someplace else, spreading there too. Before you know it, you’ve become a carrier and a spreader! So, to avoid all the gross simply hang your belongings on a hook or keep them on your lap- it will be worth it!

3. The Dreaded Flush

As we have learned, everything in a public restroom from the floor to toilet paper is covered in bacteria. The culprit? The flush. In fact, every time the toilet flushes, a process called aerosolization occurs. You’ve probably experienced it- when droplets of toilet water disseminate at least six feet through the air. These droplets come from the toilet bowl and could contain anything from E. coli to salmonella. And so, each time a toilet gets flushed germs get spread, latching onto walls, door handles, toilet seat and- the actual toilet paper. This is unsurprising, as a typical toilet bowl has over three million germs per square inch.

There are a few ways to combat the dreaded flush, but not all are applicable in every restroom. For instance, the ideal is to just put down the toilet lid. But alas, lids have been mostly phased out of public restrooms. Just our luck. However, there is still a way around it. For instance, only flush the toilet when you are ready to leave your stall. That way, you’re not trapped with the airborne bacteria.

4. Getting Out Safely

So, you finished going the bathroom, now it’s time to leave. There should be no more germ concerns right? Wrong! Beware of door knobs and faucet handles – they are pretty serious danger zones. This is because they’re the first things you touch after using the bathroom. Ironically, by turning the tap off after washing your hands you just re-contaminate yourself all over again! So laugh no more when you see people using paper towel to turn the faucet or open the door, you need to start doing the same.

5. The Horrors of The Hand Dryer

Once you’ve turned the tap on with a paper towel, washed your hands and then turned the tap off with your paper towel. Of course, this is assuming there is paper towel handy. If there isn’t, you might be tempted to use the electronic hand dryer…Please don’t!

Similar to the flush, electronic hand dryers blow bacteria particles into the air, and circulate them through the room, contaminating everything. So, if you have the choice always stick to the paper towel. However, if you’re seriously grossed out, consider carrying hand sanitizer or baby wipes. You could even go a step farther and bring your own toilet paper, but that would be crazy…wouldn’t it?
